Stanton Peter Manolakas (July 25, 1946–August 28, 2022) was an American artist renowned for his detailed watercolor paintings that capture the essence of American life from the mid-19th century to the present.[1][2][3].
Early life
[edit]Born in Detroit, he grew up in a household deeply rooted in both technical precision and artistic expression. His father, an architectural draftsman, and his mother, a "competent artist", each contributed to the foundation of his creative journey[4]. Manolakas' work reflects this dual influence, showcasing cityscapes and urban scenes that merge structural accuracy with artistic flair.[5]
Manolakas' early passion was music. He pursued formal training at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music.[6]
Career
[edit]It wasn’t until 1981 that Manolakas transitioned to painting. He ultimately dedicating himself exclusively to watercolor, citing its durability in a Detroit television interview given in 1993: "Watercolor is what separates me from other artists. Unfortunately, a lot of people feel that oil is a more permanent medium. In my opinion and according to my research, it isn't, which is why I work in watercolor."[7]
He began selling work in galleries in 1984[1]. His contributions to the art world have earned him recognition in Who’s Who in American Art, as well as the Marquis editions of Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World[8]. He was inducted into the Who's Who Worldwide Lifetime Achievement list in 2017[9].
Manolakas' work has been exhibited at museums such as the Dossin Great lakes Museum and the Lake Superior Marine Museum[10]. His work can be found in the collections of Marriott Hotels, other corporate collections, and the private collections of Steven Bechtel, Henry DuPont, Bernard Horowitz and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tarbell. Reproductions of Manolakas' work are widely available, having been licensed by Applejack Art Partners and prints distributed through affiliates such as Art Boom Ltd[11]
As of 2025, licensed prints of his work are available for purchase on both Amazon.com and Walmart.com.[12] [13]
