Sophie Constantinou is an American film director, cinematographer, and producer.

Constantinou co-founded Citizen Film, a San Francisco based documentary nonprofit, in 2002.[1] With Constantinou as co-director, Citizen Film creates media that "fosters active engagement in cultural and civic life".[2]

She serves on the board of the California Native Plant Society,[3] Collective Eye Films,[4] and San Francisco's Park and Recreation Open Space Advisory Committee.[5]

San Francisco Initiatives

[edit]

Constantinou is the founder of San Francisco's Bernal Cut Project. The project aims to renovate 16 acres of city space on the Bernal Cut into a biodiversity corridor, using "lighting, interpretive signage," and "native gardens that support local pollinators".[6]

Constantinou has also worked on initiatives in the Fillmore District since 2010.[7] Produced by Citizen Film, the Buchanan Stories / Buchanan Change project highlights active community members and organizations as well as issues faced by the community.[8] The storytelling efforts coincide with a campaign to renovate the Buchanan Street Mall, a public park in the neighborhood.[9]

Citizen Film

[edit]

Constantinou co-founded Citizen Film with Sam Ball and Kate Stilley Steiner[10]

At Citizen Film, Constantinou directed the Community Leadership Series (2003 – 2013) for the San Francisco Foundation, which recognizes individuals and organizations "whose leadership makes a significant impact in Bay Area communities".[11] Constantinou's other directing credits with Citizen Film include Joann Sfar Draws from Memory (2012) about graphic novelist Joann Sfar[12]; Lunch Love Community (2014), a transmedia project about public school food systems co-directed with Helen De Michiel[13]; GLIDE Memorial Church's Values series (2014 – 2024)[14]; and the Narrative Shift project (2021 – 2024) made in collaboration with San Francisco Human Rights Commission's Dream Keeper Initiative.[15]

Other Film Work

[edit]

Constantinou is credited as a Director and Cinematographer on several other films.

She made Trans (1994), which premiered at Frameline Film Festival.[16] She also directed and filmed Between the Lines (1998)[17] and Divided Loyalties (2001).[18]

Constantinou filmed The Joy of Life (2005)[19] and The Royal Road (2015),[20] which were both Sundance Film Festival selections directed by Jenni Olson.

She has been credited as Director of Photography on films produced by larger stations including PBS, HBO, and KQED. She directed photography for the PBS documentary Presumed Guilty (2000),[21] The PBS/POV film Maquilapolis (2006),[22] and HBO feature documentaries Unchained Memories (2003)[23] and Regarding Susan Sontag (2014).[24]
