Slimbook is a company based in Valencia that assembles electronic devices, mainly ultrabooks.[1][2][3], desktop computers[4], and mini PCs[5]. Their main feature is that their components are 100% compatible with GNU/Linux systems, although this does not mean that proprietary operating systems like Windows cannot be used.

History[edit]

Slimbook was created in 2015 at the initiative of its CEO, Alejandro López, and belongs to the company Grupo Odín, which was founded in 2007 in Valencia. The personal goal was to have a high-end ultrabook with GNU/Linux pre-installed, as there were practically no alternatives available.[6]

Their first ultrabook was launched on July 1st, 2015[7], receiving generally positive reviews.[8][9]

Their first public presentation took place on November 15th, 2015, at Ubuncat 15.10 in Olot[10], followed by their presentation at the IV Free Software Conference organized by the UNED Associated Center in Villarreal[11][12].

In 2018, Slimbook won the Open Awards, presented by OpenExpo, for Best Service/Solution Provider[13], alongside other winners such as IBM, the podcast Compilando Podcast, and the WordPress Community. That same year, they opened Linux Center, a physical space for sharing free knowledge[14].

In 2019, it was announced that the brand was actively participating in the construction of the PowerPC Notebook[15], a computer built with free hardware, by providing the chassis[16].

In 2020, they organized a campaign to help free software developers continue their projects by providing both funding and equipment[17].

In 2021, they became sponsors of the KDE Community[18], and in 2022, they became sponsors of LPI[19].

Products[edit]

Since its inception in 2015, the range of products has been expanding. Currently, they offer a variety of ultrabooks (mid-range, high-end, and gaming), desktop computers, all-in-one devices, and mini PCs, as well as peripherals such as video capture cards[20], RGB keyboards, and mini USB-C HDMI docking hubs, all compatible with GNU/Linux systems.

Software[edit]

Since its inception, Slimbook has developed software aimed at enhancing the efficiency of its devices and improving user experience. As a result, they offer the Slimbook OS to the community, a distribution based on Ubuntu tailored for their computers.

Additionally, they have created specific applications for their devices:

  • Battery 4: a battery manager for their devices.
  • Face: an application for facial recognition unlocking.
  • Gestures: a manager for actions performed on the touchpad.
  • Intel and AMD controller: to optimize the performance of these processors in their devices.
  • RGB Keyboard: a manager for visual effects on keyboards with RGB capabilities.
  • Make Up: an application to customize the appearance of work environments.

Relations with the Free Software Community[edit]

Slimbook maintains an active relationship with the Free Software community of users and developers, which materializes through various meeting points such as forums, podcasts[24][25][26], and the creation of specific tutorials aimed at solving common issues.

Linux Center[edit]

Linux Center[14] is the physical space provided by Slimbook for hosting events or workshops. Established in 2018[27], it has been a meeting point for the promotion of projects such as Odoo, the Python programming language, the Ubuntu operating system, and the 3D image editor Blender.

Due to pandemic restrictions, their activities ceased in 2020, resuming on September 10, 2022[28], and offering a comprehensive program of events[29].

Since 2018[30], Slimbook has sponsored and/or collaborated with the annual KDE España event known as Akademy-es, providing financial support and equipment for presentations, recordings, and event streaming.

Slimbook collaborated with the annual international GNOME community event known as GUADEC in the year 2018.

Slimbook sponsored the KDE e.V. Board Sprint in June 2019.

Special editions[edit]

Slimbook develops alternative editions of its own devices with specific modifications[35][36], such as the KDE Slimbook V or the Slimbook Fedora II. The purpose is to donate a portion of the profits from sales to various projects, such as KDE or GNOME Foundation.
