Samuel Reuben Greenfield is a New York based saxophonist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist.
Background
[edit]Growing up in Philadelphia, he was surrounded by music from a very young age. After graduating college, Sam has had the opportunity to record and travel the world with several different artists. He is most commonly seen and heard with NJ-based band Thank You Scientist, and guitarist Cory Wong. He has recorded saxophone for many other prominent artists, including Mariah Carey, Queen Latifah, R. Kelly, Dave Koz, Eric Roberson, Stokley, Anita Wilson, and Lotus.
In addition to touring and recording with other artists, Sam is devoted to creating his own music, in which he draws from a wide variety of influences. He has utilized his versatility as a musician to create something truly unique. His debut album as a solo artist was released in March 2021, and his sophomore album was released in November 2021.[1]
History
[edit]Sam Greenfield's musical journey began in a household deeply rooted in music, with both of his parents being accomplished musicians. His father played bassoon and piano, while his mother was a clarinetist, pianist, and saxophonist who taught lessons. Growing up surrounded by instruments and melodies, Sam developed a natural affinity for music. At the age of six, he picked up the saxophone and quickly found it to be a perfect fit, although he also dabbled in trumpet before fully committing to the saxophone. His early education came from local teachers and family friends, and his parents' guidance helped him establish a strong foundation in music.
Sam's passion for jazz and the saxophone grew as he studied with notable mentors like Mike Fine, who introduced him to jazz legends such as Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, and Tony Salicandro, who encouraged his development through classical techniques and sound production. His love for music led him to attend the Rimon School of Music in Israel, where he began to hone his craft further. After returning to the United States, Sam pursued formal education at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he studied under renowned educators like Chris Farr and Larry McKenna.[2]
His time in Philly was instrumental in shaping his career, as he immersed himself in the local jazz scene, performing at jam sessions and gaining valuable experience as a freelancer. By 2019, he began touring with various bands, further expanding his musical horizons. Sam's early years were marked by a deep commitment to both developing his technical skills and exploring the creative possibilities of jazz, which would continue to influence his work throughout his career.
Style
[edit]Sam Greenfield is known for his distinctive fusion of jazz and contemporary music. Drawing deep inspiration from the Japanese jazz fusion movement, Greenfield's work blends the intricate rhythms and melodic complexity of jazz with the electric, experimental sounds pioneered by artists like Casiopea and Masayoshi Takanaka. His unique approach to the saxophone is marked by smooth, flowing lines and a bold use of harmony, often incorporating elements of funk, rock, and electronic music. With a passion for pushing musical boundaries, Greenfield has become a significant figure in the modern jazz scene, gaining recognition for his innovative sound and commitment to blending diverse genres.
