Resurrection was the debut album by Canadian heavy metal band Children of Metal, released on March 1, 2023, under the unsigned independent label Carpool Records.
Background and Recording
The creation of Resurrection began during the COVID-19 pandemic when founding member Bryan Elsey, stranded on a beach in Cuba, conceived the idea of creating a heavy metal album to channel the uncertainty and frustration of the times. By March 2021, Elsey had begun writing the album, and in an intense burst of creativity (7 days), he wrote and recorded the bed tracks himself, performing on all instruments.
Once the bed tracks were completed, Elsey brought in more proficient musicians to re-record over them, refining the album’s sound.
The recording process was unconventional All contributions were compiled by Elsey, who also handled basic production and cleanup of the tracks in preparation for the final mix. Most of the band members did not know each other during the recording phase—except for Ryan Walsh (drums) and Mason Ladoceur (keyboards)—and none of them met in person until after the album’s completion. By October 2022, the album’s final mix was handled by noted engineer Ben Leggett, but delays in sourcing vinyl pellets due to the pandemic pushed the pressing back by six months.
Philosophy and Manifesto
The liner notes of Resurrection captured the band's ethos of rebellion, resilience, and empowerment. With a focus on confronting societal corruption, personal limitations, and oppression, the manifesto served as a call to arms for listeners to "find your mind, find your body, and rise from the ashes."
RESURRECTION OF WHAT YOU MIGHT ASK?
WE WERE THERE DURING THAT GOLDEN AGE OF METAL-CHILDREN-AND OH AND WHAT A GLORIOUS TIME IT WAS.
FOR MANY, THE ONES WHO LOVED IT, IT WAS A CALL TO ARMS. THE AGGRESSION OF THAT MUSIC LIT WITHIN OURSELVES FIRES. WE SNIDELY SNEERED AT GREED, CORRUPTION, HYPOCRISY—WHATEVER. IT WAS FURIOUS AND COMPLEX MUSIC THAT PURPOSELY AGITATED AND INSTIGATED A DEEP AND HEALTHY CONTEMPT FOR A COMPLEX AND FURIOUS WORLD.
METAL WANTED PEACE; METAL WANTED JOY. METAL WOULD WAGE WAR TO WIN BOTH. METAL WAS A JUGGERNAUT.
Themes and Lyrics
The album delved into themes of war, political hypocrisy, and personal strength. Key tracks included:
- "A Button Away": A reflection on the constant threat of nuclear war and the ease with which global powers escalated conflicts.
- "A Monster In Us All": A critical look at human greed and hypocrisy, exploring the primal urges that lay beneath even the most refined exteriors.
- "Sounds of War": The track that solidified the album’s direction, detailing the devastating reality of war from both the soldiers' and civilians' perspectives.
Cover Art
The album cover was designed by renowned artist Zirco Fisher, famous for his work with Squid Lid. He was asked to create an "Eddy" (from Iron Maiden) type figure, again in homage to the iconic ghoulish mascots on metal album covers. Fisher’s unique style added a visual depth to the album, perfectly complementing its themes of war, rebellion, and personal resurrection.
Reception
Upon its release, Resurrection received critical acclaim for its blend of classic heavy metal sound with modern socio-political relevance. The decision to release the album on vinyl was a nod to the genre’s roots, despite delays in production due to the pandemic. The album was particularly well-received in Western Canada, with strong streaming numbers and positive reviews highlighting its intense energy and lyrical depth.

IT FELL...BUT FOR THOSE OF US WHO UNDERSTOOD IT...WE KNEW ITS FALL WAS TEMPORARY. OF ALL MUSIC OF THE LAST 150 YEARS, NO OTHER GENRE IS MORE CONNECTED TO SOMETHING MYSTICAL-A BEYOND. IT WOULD RISE AGAIN. FOR THE TIME BEING IT WOULD LIVE UNDERGROUND.
AND WE GOT OLDER.
I REMEMBER SOME ELDERS SAYING ‘YOU ARE THE FUTURE”-THIS IS YOUR WORLD TO HEAL. IT FELT LIKE THIS WAS THEIR CONTRIBUTION-TO PASS ON THIS TORCH. THEY FELT SO GOOD ABOUT SAID CONTRIBUTION-THE GIFT OF EMPOWERMENT. BUT THERE THEY STOOD IN THEIR POWER POSITIONS, WITH ALL THE KEYS TO ALL THE KINGDOMS, DOING NOTHING BUT, THROUGH SOME TWISTED LOGIC, CO-OPTING ALTRUISM TO LAY THEIR BURDEN ON THE YOUTH.
WE ARE NOW THAT FUTURE. IT IS HERE. WE NOW HOLD ALL POSITIONS OF POWER-THE WORLD IS OURS. DESPITE THE LOSS OF OUR YOUTH WE ARE STRONGER IN EVERY WAY.
WHAT WILL WE DO? WHAT WILL BE OUR LEGACY? WILL WE CHANGE THE WORLD OR PASS THAT BURDEN ON AGAIN?
SO WHAT ARE WE RESURRECTING?
THIS MUSIC IS ABOUT AGGRESSIVELY ATTACKING THE THINGS THAT PREVENT LOVE OF SELF AND FELLOW MAN.
IF YOU HAVE DECIDED YOUR STORY HAS BEEN WRITTEN START WRITING ANEW. BE A JUGGERNAUT. RISE FROM ASHES. COME BACK TO LIFE.
LET THIS BE THE SOUNDTRACK TO THAT NEW BEGINNING-AND A MUCH BIGGER ONE. FIND YOUR MIND. FIND YOUR BODY. FIND YOUR CALL TO ARMS. YOU ARE A FORCE. BE IT.
GO FORTH AND WREAK HAVOC ON TYRANNY.
GO FORTH MAY CONVICTIONS NOT SETTLE.
GO FORTH IN YOUR WAR WAKE LEAVE BEAUTY.
GO FORTH ALL YOU CHILDREN OF METAL—
