The Magalhães laptop was a low-cost personal computer assembled in Portugal. It was based on the second generation of Intel's Classmate PC.[1][2]
The name comes from the Portuguese explorer “Fernão de Magalhães”.[3] The assembly of this computer in Portugal, under the e-escolinha program, was the result of a deal, announced on July 31, 2008, between the Government of the Portuguese Republic and Intel for the creation of a consortium, with majority Portuguese capital, made up of the companies J.P. Sá Couto, Prológica and Intel.[4]
The laptop's target market was children between the ages of six and ten. It was available in two versions with different CPUs: initially an Intel Celeron at 900 MHz and then an Intel Atom[5] at 1.66 GHz. The latter is newer and more energy-efficient.
