Patty Gerstenblith is a Distinguished Research Professor of Law at Depaul University and the director of its Center for Art, Museum & Cultural Heritage Law.[1] She is a leading expert in law related to cultural heritage, art, and museums.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Gerstenblith holds an A.B. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College, a Ph.D. in Art History and Anthropology from Harvard University, and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law.[2] While at Northwestern, she also served as an article editor for the Law Review.[2]
Career
[edit]From 1995 to 2002, Gerstenblith worked as the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Cultural Property, a peer-reviewed journal that provides a multidisciplinary forum for views and debate surrounding cultural property and heritage.[3]
From 2005 to 2011, Gerstenblith served as the founding president of The Lawyers’ Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation (LCCHP). LCCHP is a nonprofit organization based in Washington D.C. made up of lawyers, law students, and members of the public and focused on legal education, awareness, and advocacy around the subject of cultural heritage preservation.[4]
In 2011, she was appointed by President Obama as the chair of the Cultural Property Advisory Committee (CPAC) in the U.S. Department of State, a position which she held until 2017. She had previously served on the committee as a member from 2000 to 2003, appointed by President Clinton.[2] The CPAC is an 11-member presidentially appointed committee responsible for reviewing requests for import restrictions from foreign governments around the world and considering renewals of existing agreements, as well as making reports and recommendations to the Department of State. It was established by The Convention on Cultural Property Implementation Act.[5]
In 2020, she became the President of the Board of Directors for the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield (USCBS). She also serves as the chair of the Blue Shield International Working Group on Illegal Trade in Cultural Objects.[2] The USCBS was established in 2006 by Major (Ret.) Corine Wegener, to protect cultural heritage under threat around the world from armed conflict and natural disaster.[6]
