Nik Popovic,[2] better known as his moniker Nik Nocturnal, is a Canadian YouTuber and musician.[3][4] He is also a member of the metalcore group Termina.[5]
Early life
[edit]Popovic grew up in Toronto, raised by his grandparents, cousins, and a single mother. He began playing guitar at age 10, took orchestra as a class in high school, and learned music theory.[2] His cousin first introduced him to metal, showing him bands like Alexisonfire, As I Lay Dying, and Underoath.[2][5]
Popovic initially went to University to specialize in accounting. His interest in music overtook his education, causing him to be dropped from the honors program when his attention shifted to creating covers of other songs.[5]
Career
[edit]Popovic began his YouTube channel in 2014. He took on the name Nik Nocturnal, as he had exported music under the same name in his teens. The name was also chosen because "he disliked words like "death, evil, satanic" but wanted something dark". Popovic was inspired to post his music on YouTube, having watched similar videos posted by Shades of Black, Angel Vivaldi, and KillrBuckeye. His channel initially started as a place to share his music, however, it evolved to share covers of other songs, reaction videos, list-based videos, tutorials, and meme videos. As of 2019, it became a full-time job.[2]
In 2017, Popovic (as Nik Nocturnal) released the album Undying Shadow. The album included features from Andy Cizek (then of Makari), Baptiste Vigier (then of Betraying The Martyrs), Florestan Durand (Novelists), Andrew Ivashchenko (Shokran) and Ben English (then of Invent Animate).[6]
Popovic joined the band Breather, a reformed version of I, the Breather, in November 2021.[7]
In May 2022, Popovic began releasing trap metal music under the name NIK NXK.[8]
