Nemrud is a Progressive Rock band from Istanbul/Turkey, formed in 2008. Known for their conceptual albums and a musical style reminiscent of the 1970s progressive rock era, the band became known both in Turkey and internationally.[1][2][3]

History

[edit]

Nemrud was founded in 2008 by Mert Göçay, Aycan Sarı and Harun Sönmez by the vision of crafting music deeply rooted in the traditions of progressive rock.[4] The band tried to create music influenced by the traditions of progressive rock. They emerged from the experimental music scene in Turkey and existed as a bridge between the styles of Anatolian Rock and classic Progressive Rock, becoming the most wellknown band from Turkey.[5][6][7][8][9][10][3]

Band Name and Conceptual Roots

[edit]

The name Nemrud is derived from Mount Nemrut, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Turkey, renowned for its ancient history and monumental statues. This sacred mountain, dating back thousands of years, was once believed to be the center of the world in ancient mythology.[11][12][13][14] Reflecting this profound cultural and historical significance, Nemrud chose the site as the setting for the narrative of their debut album, Journey of the Shaman (2010).[3] The album is based on a concept inspired by Shamanism, Anatolian mythology, and the legend of Mount Nemrut.[15][8]

Album Concepts

[edit]

Journey of The Shaman (2010)

[edit]
Journey of The Shaman (2010)

In 2010, after two years of dedicated songwriting and rehearsals, Nemrud released their debut album, Journey of The Shaman is a conceptual work that explores a mystical and spiritual journey. The story follows a shaman called Mitos embarking on an existential quest, set against the ancient and mythical backdrop of Mount Nemrut presented within a progressive rock framework that combines with reflective lyrics.[14] [16] The Album consists of three tracks, each symbolizing one of the three worlds in Shamanic belief: the Upper World, the Middle World, and the Lower World. These realms represent the spiritual dimensions that a shaman traverses during their journey to seek wisdom and enlightenment according to the Shamanism.[7][4]

These spiritual dimensions represent stages in the Shamanism pursuit of wisdom and enlightenment. The album cover visually reflects this tripartite structure with three different colors, symbolizing the interconnectedness of these areas, and the music evokes a transcendent and introverted experience.[17] It became a commercial failure in Turkey because many record shops filed it in the single section upon seeing the track numbers. After a few live shows in the Turkey, Nemrud returned to the studio in March 2013 to begin work on a second album.[18]

Ritual (2013)

[edit]
Ritual (2013)

The band's second album, Ritual, builds on the philosophical and existential themes introduced in their debut. The narrative explores the rituals and traditions of ancient civilizations, reflecting on humanity's timeless search for meaning and purpose.[10] With its intricate compositions and storytelling, Ritual connects the mystical past with the spiritual questions of modern life. In the winter of 2013, Nemrud re-signed their contracts with Musea Records. Unlike the standards of the time, the album was recorded using a live recording technique, with the band playing together and recording directly onto tape instead of using digital recording. The album features the 18-minute track "Ritual", a suite of various musical segments. As of Today, it is the top rated album of the entire year of 2013 on the Psychedelic/Space Rock database Prog Archives, with an average user rating of 4.13 from over 420 ratings, and the website's twelve-highest rated album of all time.[19][20][10][14]

Nemrud (2016)

[edit]
Nemrud (2016)

In their self-titled third album, Nemrud, the band delves into themes of cosmic exploration and the human condition. Incorporating science fiction elements, the narrative reflects humanity's curiosity and quest for understanding, while maintaining the band’s classic spiritual and philosophical touches.[21] The album features four songs inspired by the legend of Mount Nemrut and is the first album recorded with the band by bassist Levent Candaş. [4]The album balances Turkish tunes with classical old school progrock sound, offering an customary for listeners drawn to profound storytelling.[9] The cover art for Nemrud's third album, Nemrud (2016), was created by renowned artist Betül Dengili Atlı, who is celebrated for her work on iconic album covers, including some for Led Zeppelin, Erkin Koray in the 1970s.[22][18][7]

Lineup Changes

[edit]

Following the release of their debut album, Journey of The Shaman (2010), Nemrud experienced several lineup changes, which played a significant role in shaping the band's evolving sound. Mert Göçay has been the only constant member of Nemrud since its founding in 2008.[4][9][18] Drummer Mert Alkaya joined the band right after the debut album relase in 2010. [8][4] Before self-titled album release bass guitar player Levent Candaş joined Nemrud and played in two festivals in Turkey.[5][7]

Musical Style

[edit]

Nemrud's music is deeply rooted in the traditions of progressive rock, a genre that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. [4] Nemrud seamlessly blends these classic elements with a Turkish tunes.[7][4] The band draws significant influence from iconic pioneers of the genre, such as Pink Floyd, Eloy (band), Camel (band) and Yes (band). This inspiration is evident in their use of atmospheric soundscapes, extended instrumental passages, and conceptual storytelling.[3] Like their predecessors, Nemrud often constructs albums that revolve around a central theme or narrative, immersing listeners in a cohesive and introspective journey.[5][23][2]

Nemrud songs sometimes use pivot notes and pedal points, creating "catchy" harmonies and a "edgy, doomy" feeling also many use unusual or changing time signatures.[7][3] [19][18] [10]

In addition to the classic prog influences, Nemrud occasionally incorporates elements from other genres, such as psychedelic rock, symphonic rock, and even touches of Eastern musical motifs.[9][14][3]
