Neşe Alten (1972, Şarköy, Tekirdağ - 26th of October 1993, Bismil, Diyarbakır) and Hasan Alten (1928 - 26th of October 1993, Bismil, Diyarbakır), a Turkish teacher and her father respectively were killed in a Kurdistan Workers' Party attack in 26th of October 1993. They were killed only 25 days after Neşe's assignment to Çavuşlu primary school.[1]
Context
[edit]During the 1990s PKK was waging an active guerilla warfare against the Turkish authorities. PKK aimed for destruction of all Turkish institutions in areas of conflict. As a part of this policy, teachers were prohibited from entering borders PKK claimed as Kurdistan.[2] Schools were being burnt by the PKK, attacks on teachers themselves were becoming more widespread.[3]

Life
[edit]Neşe was born in 1972, Tekirdağ, Şarköy. She decided to be a teacher following her primary and secondary school education.[4][3] She then went to Bursa Uludağ University faculty of education, where she specialised in classroom teaching.[5] Following her graduation Alten was assigned to Çavuşlu, a village in Diyarbakır, Bismil[1]. Worried about Neşe due to the ongoing PKK insurgency, her father Hasan Alten also moved to Çavuşlu with her. Neşe found the local school in poor condition, she spent from her own salary to improve the conditions.[6] On 26th of October, 1993 Alten family's door was knocked by PKK members who disguised themselves as local villagers. Neşe and Hasan were killed in this attack.[1]
Legacy
[edit]Following the murder, Çavuşoğlu village in Bismil, Diyarbakır was raided by gendarmerie forces. 11 people were detained and 45 houses were either partially or entirely burnt. According to Human Rights Association (Turkey), the raid was a reprisal for the murder of Neşe Alten and Hasan Alten.[7]
Neşe was not forgotten and became a symbol in Turkey. As part of the Turkish policy to keep the name of those who have been killed by PKK alive, Neşe's name was given to several schools and streets. Neşe and Hasan were buried side by side. Their grave are visited every 24th of November during the teachers' day.
