Monroe Grisman is an American guitarist, producer and songwriter[1]. He is known for his work in The American Drag and as a member of Petty Theft, a tribute band performing the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.[2][3] He also co-produced the documentary film Village Music: Last of the Great Record Stores with his sister, Gillian Grisman.[4][5]

Early life

Grisman was named for bluegrass music pioneer Bill Monroe, and lives in Fairfax, California[1]. Grisman is the son of singer/songwriter Harmony Grisman and mandolinist David Grisman.[3][6] He is married to April Grisman, the daughter of late Fairfax rock poster artist Pat Ryan[1] and they have twins, a son, Miles, and a daughter, Aliya, 25[7]

The American Drag (2004–2009)

In 2004, Grisman co-founded the rock band The American Drag alongside guitarist Will Evankovich and bassist Joe Shaughnessy.[3] The band released its debut album, American Drag, in 2005, followed by Out of the Sky in 2009. The second album featured drummer John Mader and keyboardist Eric Levy (Garaj Mahal). The band also performed as an opening act for Styx at the House of Blues in Los Angeles and the Mountain Winery in Saratoga.[3] Jack Blades provided the CD cover shot, a circa World War I aviation photo taken by Blades's grandfather.

Petty Theft (2008–Present)

Since 2008, Grisman has been a guitarist for Petty Theft, San Francisco-based tribute band that plays the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.[8] The band has performed at multiple venues throughout the Western States. [9]

Film Production: Village Music: Last of the Great Record Stores (2012)

In 2012, Grisman produced the documentary Village Music: Last of the Great Record Stores, with his sister, Gillian Grisman. The film premeired at the Mill Valley Film Festival.[10] and chronicles the history of Village Music a record story in Mill Valley, California, which closed in 2007. It documents Sweetwater Music Hall and the music community in Mill Valley from the 1960s on and features archival footage and performances by musicians such as Elvis Costello, Bob Weir, Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, John Sebastian, Dan Hicks, Huey Lewis, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Pop Staples, Jerry Garcia, and Carlos Santana.[11][12]
