Mereworth Woods is a small part of the Defence Training Estate, owned by the UK Ministry of Defence, and operated by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation. It is situated near the town of Maidstone in Kent. The site is approximately 300 acres in size.[1]
History
[edit]In the 1940s the Ministry of Defence acquired Mereworth Woods for use as a dispersed ammunition facility for the Royal Air Force, it also contained accommodation.
In the post war period of the 1950s the site was converted into a defence training area, used extensively for Military Training.[2][3]
Current Use
[edit]The Ministry of Defence still retains the site and it is regularly used by regular, reserve and cadet forces to train Alongside police and search and rescue units where needs arise.[4]
The site retains several buildings for use as administration facilities, shelter and ablutions.
The site sits within the broader administrative area of the Cinque Ports Training Area.
There is also an active Helipad on the site, although unmanned sees regular flights.
Public Access
[edit]There are a number of Public rights of way along the training area, and access is limited to these only.[5][6]
