Memoirella is a literary form coined [1]by Michelle Kicherer[2], American writer and founder of indie press Banana Pitch[3] Press. The term is used to describe a creative non-fiction work that is shorter than a traditional literary memoir, but longer than a personal essay.

Definition

The English word memoir [4]derives from Middle French memoire (from memory) and from Latin memoria plus -ellus, diminutive suffix.

Characteristics

A memoirella is similar to its fiction counterpart, the novella[5], in that it features fewer conflicts than a long form work, yet it includes more complexity than a personal essay. This allows more time for plot points to develop. Word count varies but on average falls between 20,000 and 45,000 words.
