Mario Kart (Nintendo Switch 2) is an upcoming kart racing game being developed for the Nintendo Switch 2. As in past entries, players will be participating in races featuring various characters and locales from the Super Mario series.
It was first hinted to be in the works in a 2022 article published by GamesIndustry, where Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games stated among his predictions for the year that "Mario Kart 9 is in active development" and that "Nintendo could tease it this year."[1]
Three years later, on January 16, 2025, a first-look trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 was released, which included footage of a new Mario Kart entry running on the console.[2] It showcased various characters and vehicles returning from previous entries, as well as an expansive new track called "Mario Bros. Circuit" that appears to be themed after the Southwestern United States. The preview also revealed that the starting line is now able to accommodate up to 24 racers, double the amount that was featured in Mario Kart 8.
The first-look trailer finished with an announcement that a Nintendo Direct would be held on April 2, 2025, where more details would be announced.
