Maratha invasion of Rohilkhand was led by the Maharaja of Gwalior, Mahadji Shinde in 1772.[1][2] According to many historical sources, The Marathas under Mahadji plundered and captured the fort of Pathargarh and also captured Rohilla Afghans including their royal family members.[3]

Background and the invasion

The Rohilla Afghans of Rohilkhand participated with the Durrani Empire in the Third Battle of Panipat against the Maratha Empire so Mahadji Shinde, the Maharaja of Gwalior State who had rivalry with the Kingdom of Rohilkhand retaliated against them. Mahadji Shinde invaded and sacked the city of Najibabad.The Rohilla chieftain Zabita Khan retreated to Punjab and the Marathas captured the royal family members of him and the Rohillas[4][5]
