Mainsheet is a peer-reviewed journal of maritime studies, produced by Mystic Seaport Museum. Founded in 1929, Mystic Seaport Museum has long been a center for the preservation and interpretation of America's maritime heritage. Through Mainsheet, the museum provides its global audience with a virtual gateway to explore the maritime world.
What is Mainsheet?
The name Mainsheet, referring to an essential part of a sailboat’s rigging, is a fitting metaphor for the publication’s role: just as the mainsheet helps guide the boat’s direction, the publication helps steer the reader through the complex and fascinating world of maritime history. With this in mind, Mainsheet curates content that not only highlights the museum’s own collections and exhibitions but also engages with the wider maritime community and the ongoing preservation efforts within the field.
It is an open access journal, published both in print and online, that showcases multidisciplinary perspectives in peer-reviewed articles by scholars, poetry, fiction, and art connecting to the journal theme. Individual issues as well as subscriptions can be purchased on Mystic Seaport Museum's website.
Educational and Inspiring
One of Mainsheet's most important roles is its ability to educate and inspire. By sharing stories that highlight both the history of seafaring and the current efforts to preserve that history, Mainsheet helps readers develop a deeper understanding of the significance of maritime culture. Whether it's detailing the complex relationship between sailors and the sea, exploring the role of women in maritime history, or celebrating the craft of traditional boatbuilders, Mainsheet invites readers to reflect on the far-reaching influence of maritime heritage on the world today.
The publication is also designed to be accessible to a broad audience, from casual readers with an interest in history to scholars and professionals in the field. Its combination of scholarly research and engaging storytelling ensures that it is not only informative but also enjoyable to read.
