Lara Boro
[edit]Lara Boro (born August 1, 1967)[1] is a media and business information executive who became CEO of The Economist Group, publisher of The Economist, in September 2019.[2] She previously ran the Intelligence arm of Informa plc, served as CEO International at Ascential plc and held senior-level positions at CPA Global, the Financial Times and Mondex International.[1]
Early Life
[edit]Boro was born in Croatia to a Lebanese father and a Croatian-Austrian mother. She grew up in Lebanon until the war of 1975 when she moved to the former Yugoslavia and later to the UK where she attended the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle.[1] Boro studied economics and business at UCLA and earned an MBA at INSEAD in France.[1]
Career
[edit]At The Economist Group, Boro transformed The Economist into a digital-first business, strengthening its digital offerings and reducing subscriber churn.[3] While CEO, Boro launched Economist Impact in October 2021, bringing together The Economist Group’s policy research, sponsored content, advertising and events under one brand and business unit for clients.[4] Since Boro started at the company she has focused on delivering sustainable profitable growth (the Economist Group recorded its highest overall revenue of £376.8m in 2023), strengthening the business foundations that support the independent journalism of The Economist.[3]
Under Boro’s leadership, The Economist Group signed up to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce the company’s emissions by 25% by 2025.[5] In 2024, the Group reduced its emissions by 30% since base year 2020,[6] and upgraded its science-based target to a reduction of absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions of 68% by FY2030 from a FY2020 base year, and a 42% reduction of absolute scope 3 emissions within the same timeframe.[7] It is the first media company to purchase carbon dioxide removal credits from Climeworks, a Swiss company that captures carbon dioxide from the air to store it underground in geological storage formations.[8]
Before joining The Economist Group, Boro was a divisional CEO at Informa plc where she was head of the Group’s data and information businesses.[9][10] She joined Informa in 2014 from Ascential plc (formerly Emap plc) where she started as Strategy director for the B2B division and then became CEO, International division, overseeing the MENA, China, India and Brazil businesses and was CEO of MEED, working out of Dubai.[1][11]
Prior to that Boro held strategy, M&A and commercial development roles for CPA Global.[12] Boro started her career at Mondex International (now Mastercard) in commercial development and became head of e-commerce in 1999 at the Financial Times, where she spent four years.[1] She became an Advisory Board Member at MIT Technology Review in 2022.[13]
Personal life
[edit]Boro is married, lives in London and has two children.[1]
