Lankhon Komnit Organization (LKO) is a grassroots theatre group based in Battambang, Cambodia, dedicated to the inclusive development of Lakhon Niyeay (Cambodian Spoken Theatre). Officially registered as a non-governmental organization with the Royal Cambodian Government Ministry of Interior in 2019, LKO uses theatre as a tool for empowerment and community engagement.[1]

History and Organization

LKO was officially registered as a non-governmental organization with the Royal Cambodian Government Ministry of Interior in 2019. Its roots lie in the Battambang arts community, with a mission to revitalize Cambodian spoken theatre and use it as a platform for empowerment and social transformation. LKO collaborates with local communities, NGOs, and artists to create impactful performances and workshops addressing issues such as gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ rights, safe migration, and education.

The organization operates with a core philosophy of ethical collaboration, transparency, and respect for diverse voices, ensuring its programs authentically represent the lived experiences of its participants.

Program and Activities

Theatre for Empowerment

This program targets marginalized Cambodian adults, offering workshops and Forum Theatre performances. Participants are guided to explore their experiences and create public performances addressing issues like human trafficking and rural education challenges.

Theatre for the Future

Aimed at Cambodian youth aged 16-25, this initiative provides workshops ranging from single-day sessions to intensive five-day courses. Using Theatre of the Oppressed methodologies, participants engage in creative expression while learning critical thinking and teamwork skills.

Recognition and Milestones

LKO has been recognized for its innovative use of theatre to address social challenges. In 2022–23, the organization presented "Our Roads," a project amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities, and "White Dress," a Forum Theatre performance by the LGBTQ+ community. The organization also led "The Tuk Tuk Puppet Tour" which brought theatre to unconventional spaces, reaching remote communities with engaging performances.

Collaborations

LKO has partnered with international organizations such as Voice Global and forumZFD to advance its work in conflict transformation and community dialogue. These collaborations include training workshops, public performances, and research initiatives designed to strengthen the cultural landscape of Cambodia.
