Jun Zhuang

[edit]

Jun Zhuang is an American industrial engineer and academic known for his contributions to risk analysis, decision science, and disaster management. He currently serves as the Associate Dean for Research in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and holds the Morton C. Frank Professorship in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB), part of the State University of New York (SUNY).[1]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Zhuang earned his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Industrial Engineering from Southeast University in Nanjing, China. He then pursued graduate studies in the United States, obtaining a Master of Science (M.S.) in Agricultural Economics from the University of Kentucky, followed by both an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008.[2]

Academic Career

[edit]

Upon completing his Ph.D., Zhuang joined the University at Buffalo in 2008 as an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. He was promoted to associate professor and later to full professor, eventually being appointed as the Morton C. Frank Professor. In addition to his faculty role, he serves as the Associate Dean for Research in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.[1]

Research

[edit]

Zhuang's research integrates operations research, big data analytics, game theory, and decision analysis to improve mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts for natural and human-made disasters. His work also extends to healthcare, sports, transportation, supply chain management, sustainability, and architecture.[1]

He has served as the principal investigator on over 40 research grants funded by organizations such as the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the National Fire Protection Association.[1]

Zhuang has published more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles in esteemed publications, including "Operations Research", "IISE Transactions", "Risk Analysis", "Decision Analysis", and the "European Journal of Operational Research".[3][dead link]

Awards and Honors

[edit]

Throughout his career, Zhuang has received numerous accolades, including:

- Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Fellow Award (2024): Recognizing outstanding leaders who have made significant, nationally recognized contributions to industrial and systems engineering.[4]

- Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) Fellow Award (2022): For substantial achievements in science or public policy relating to risk analysis and significant service to the society.[5]

- SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities (2020-2021): Honoring his exceptional scholarly and creative achievements.[5] - Chauncey Starr Distinguished Young Risk Analyst Award (2019): Presented by the Society for Risk Analysis for notable contributions to the field by a young investigator.[5]

- UB Exceptional Scholar Award for Sustained Achievement (2019): Recognizing his continuous outstanding research contributions.[5]

Teaching and Mentorship

[edit]

Zhuang is dedicated to teaching and mentoring students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has taught courses such as:

- IE 412/512: Decision Analysis

- IE 576: Applied Stochastic Processes

- IE 675: Game Theory

His commitment to education has been recognized with awards such as the "Distinguished Educator Award" from the Society for Risk Analysis in 2023 and the "UB Teaching Innovation Award" in 2020.[6]

Professional Service

[edit]

Beyond his research and teaching, Zhuang actively contributes to the academic community. He has served on study committees for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and has been involved in various working groups and review panels for national and international funding agencies.[7]
