I Hate Sex was a Canadian screamo band based in Edmonton, Alberta from 2015 to 2018. The band's sole constant member was vocalist and lyricist Nicole Boychuk. They have been credited as one of the most influential bands in Canada's screamo scene.[3][4]
History
[edit]I Hate Sex was formed in 2015 by MacEwan University classmates Nicole Boychuk and Ashton Burns, who recruited bassist Jibril Yassin and drummer Curtis Burton through social media. The name comes from a joke Boychuk made in a group chat.[5][6]
In 2015, I Hate Sex released a two-track demo with Driftwood Records.[6] Their first official release was the EP Circle Thinking, also released in 2015, which features guest vocals from Chad Fougere of Leg Witch on the track "One by Metallica."[7] The EP gained attention for its intense and cathartic lyrics and its abrasive sound,[2][4][8] earning the band a devoted online following.[5]
After lineup changes in late 2015 and early 2016, the band went on a nine-day tour in Japan organized by a super-fan in summer 2016.[2] The band's only LP, World of Grief, was released in 2017 and gained acclaimed as an important hardcore release.[3] The band supported the album with a European tour, including a spot in the lineup of Miss the Stars Festival in Berlin.[9] They also played at Sled Island Music and Arts Festival in Calgary in summer 2017.[10] Aside from stand-alone releases, I Hate Sex released three split EPs with various other acts. They played their final show in August 2018 as a headliner of New Friends Fest in Toronto.[11]
Boychuk learned screaming from a workshop at the Edmonton edition of Not Enough Fest,[2] a festival intended to promote inclusion of people of diverse genders and sexualities in music.[12] Explaining her decision to take up screaming, she said "I'm awful at singing. I can't hit notes and I sound like a dying whale."[2] She has since given screaming lessons at other events with a similar mission of promoting inclusivity.[13] The band is noted for DIY ethic and its advocacy for safe spaces in the music community.[2][5]
