Dunkelman & Son

[edit]

Dunkelman & Son Ltd are a Northamptonshire based wholesaler and retailer of Shoe and Leather care products and accessories. Founded in 1946 by Frederick Francis Dunkelman, Dunkelman & Son began in London, producing hockey sticks in a small workshop in Battersea..[1].

When Freddie[2] was 3, his family left for Canada, returning to England at the age of 17 after learning Hockey. Dunkelman moved to play for Harringey Greyhounds for the 1939-40 season[3], becoming English champions.

From Ice Hockey, to Shoe Care in Northamptonshire

[edit]

With his passion for working with wood, Freddie identified an opportunity and began, by hand, creating shoe care products, shoe horns, shoe trees, shoe polishes and brushes. During the 1950s, Dunkelman & Son's expansion of their shoe care range led to them moving to new premises by the end of the decade[4].

Dunkelman grew and as it's reputation increased, Freddie realised that the majority of his direct customers manufactured shoes within Northamptonshire, the heart of England's shoemaking industry. Northampton is famous for it's high-class shoes and boots, with the town still home to many worldwide brands such as Church's, Tricker's, Jeffery West, John Lobb, Crocket & Jones and Edward Green[5]. Northamptonshire as a county boasts Dr Martens in Wollaston, Grenson in Rushden, Loake in Kettering, Barker in Earls Barton[6] and, joining Joseph Cheaney & Sons in Desborough in 1965, Dunkelmen moved to the town starting production and distribution from central England[7]

A new era with Alma F.R.C

[edit]

Freddie Dunkelman retired in 2007, leaving his sons and daughter to continue to run the business. Less than 10 years later, Dunkelman & Son was acquired by Alma F.R.C[8], a family-owned French business with a long history in shoe care spanning three generations[9]. Dunkelman, trading with a range name of Dasco ('Dunkelman and Son Co.') now sits alongside group ranges Saphir Medaille d'Or, Saphir Beaute du Cuir, AVEL, Tarrago, Tacco and Waproo Australia. Housing these array of brands, Dunkelman now distributes to cobblers, shoe shops and shoe manufacturers alike.

In 2018, Dunkelman moved to a purpose-built 3.3-acre site in Desborough, with 41,000 square feet of offices, warehouse and production facilities further expanding the space for manufacturing and development on the edge of town[10]

In 2024, Dunkelman & Son revived it's legacy of manufacturing shoe trees in Northamptonshire, the heart of British shoemaking[11]
