"Dan Patch Days" is an annual festival held in Savage, Minnesota, celebrating the legacy of Dan Patch, a legendary harness racing horse who set world records at the beginning of the 20th century. Organized by Dan Patch Days, Inc., a not-for-profit organization, the event is coordinated by a committee of volunteers from the Savage/Prior Lake area and enjoys a partnership with the City of Savage.

The festival typically spans several days and includes a variety of events such as parades, live music, and family activities.[1] It draws attention not only for its entertainment but also as a means to fundraise for community organizations, having raised significant amounts over the years.[2] Many area sponsors, businesses, non-profits and local attractions contribute to the success of the festival.[3]

The historical significance of Dan Patch, for whom the event is named, adds a rich layer to the festival. Dan Patch, born in 1896 in Indiana, was renowned for his speed and was dubbed the "King of Pacers" after setting a world record in 1906 that stood unchallenged for decades.[4] His owner, Marion W. Savage, capitalized on Dan Patch's fame, which greatly influenced the local Savage community inspiring Dan Patch Days.[5]

The Dan Patch Days festival is significantly valued by the City of Savage, evidenced by the city council's allocation of up to $40,000 for the event in 2023, addressing concerns about volunteer shortages and inflation impacts.[6] This funding is part of a policy to support community festivals held on city property, allowing for matching funds for events like Dan Patch Days.[7] The festival, designated as a community event, benefits from these funds specifically for free music and fireworks, enhancing community engagement and celebration. The city's decision to use funds from the Liquor Fund balance underlines the festival's importance as a cultural and social hub for Savage, as supported by statements from city officials and organizers.

In 2023, the Dan Patch Days event was canceled due to inclement weather of high winds and storms.[8]
