Christoph Hintermüller (born 1993 in Unna, Germany) is an internationally acclaimed church musician, organist, choir conductor and stage hypnotist. Since August 2024, he has served as the Director of Worship and Music at the Catholic Church of St. Ignatius Martyr in Austin, Texas, USA.

In October 2013, Hintermüller began studying church music at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, where he studied under Cathedral Organist Prof. Daniel Beckmann.

In 2016, he participated in a semester abroad at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied under Christoph Bull.[1] In 2018, Hintermüller began his Master's degree in organ performance at the University of North Texas, studying with Jesse Eschbach.[2] He was awarded with a Teaching Fellow for organ which is highly usually for international students.[3]

Awards and recognitions

In 2018, Hintermüller won the AGO Student Commissioning Project in collaboration with the American composer Mark Vaughn. This competition is organized by the American Guild of Organists to promote cooperation between young composers and organists.[4] In 2019, he was awarded the E. Power Biggs Fellowship by the Organ Historical Society.[5][6][7]

Hintermüller is also an author of Musica Sacra. This is Germany's largest specialist journal for church music. He has dealt with topics relating to American choir and organ music and published articlesles on John Knowles Paine's and Dan Forrest's music.[8][9][10][11]

Hintermüller is particularly well known in Germany for focusing on Anglo-American organ music and film music in his concerts. With this combination, he tries to inspire younger people[12] in particular to play the organ. Due to the unfamiliar music, he usually moderates his concerts to provide visitors with further information. This is absolutely untypical in Europe, but is repeatedly praised in newspaper articles.[13][14][15]

Hintermüller performed on the most important organs and churches, especially in the US.

He held several music director positions in Germany on prestigious churches (Bochum[18][19][20], Cologne[21] and Troisdorf[22]).

He appears several TV productions as organist. Among others in the BR (public service broadcasting) production “Lohnt sich das”.[23]

Stage hypnosis and Miscellaneous

In addition to his church music career, Christoph Hintermüller developed a keen interest in psychology, coaching, clinical hypnosis, and stage hypnosis. He has performed worldwide under his stage name "Christo Showhypnose". He is part also the official stage hypnotist of the German magician duo known as "Die Unfassbaren", which has gained international recognition.[24]

He can also regularly be seen as an expert on the subject of hypnosis in German TV programs (including ZDF, ARD, Sat1, Pro7[25] and 3Sat[26]).

The composers Carson Cooman[27][28], Graham Twist and Andreas Willscher wrote several organ compositions for him.

Several books from him were published in the last years.[29]
