Cappel's Ace Hardware is a family owned hardware store chain located in Central Iowa. Consisting of three stores in West Des Moines, Norwalk, and Indianola.

History

[edit]

Cappel's Ace Hardware dates back to 1944 when Ivan Cappel, along with his family, relocated from Independence, Iowa to Atlantic, Iowa to pursue an opportunity to own a John Deere dealership. Ivan operated the dealership until the early 1960s, at which point he transformed it into a farm and home store with the help of his sons, Dick and Tom. The business became affiliated with Ace Hardware in 1968.

Over the years, Cappel's Ace Hardware in Atlantic has become a household name in southwest Iowa, synonymous with providing a wide range of products for farms and homes. Today, the business is run by Tom Cappel and his two sons, Tim and Trent, who continue the family tradition of offering exceptional customer service.

In 2007, Dick's son, Doug, opened a second Cappel's Ace Hardware location in West Des Moines, alongside his wife, Jen, and parents. The goal was to bring the same level of customer service and expertise that the Cappel family had been providing for generations to the West Des Moines community. A third location was added in Norwalk in 2016, and a fourth location was opened in Indianola in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Doug is the self-proclaimed "Hardware King of Iowa".
