Camille Joseph Varlack is an American attorney and government official. In January 2023, Varlack was appointed as Chief of Staff for New York Mayor Eric Adams.[1] Varlack formerly served as a Senior Advisor to the Mayor and transitioned to the role after Adams' aide Frank Carone left the post.[2] She has served multiple positions in New York government, namely as Deputy Director of State Operations, Chief Risk Officer, and member of the COVID Task Force for the State of New York.[3]

Early life and education

Varlack was born in Trinidad and Tobago and immigrated to the United States in her youth. Her mother is a nurse and moved their family to Rochester, New York, where she worked at a local hospital.[4]

She attended the University at Buffalo, SUNY and graduated with her B.A. in English. She later attended and graduated with a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, where she served as a Senior Editor for the Brooklyn Journal of International Law.

Career

Varlack began her legal career as an Assistant District Attorney for Kings County, New York. She was a founding partner and COO of Bradford, Edwards & Varlack LLP (now Bradford, Edwards LLP), a litigation boutique where she led the firm’s business advisory, employment, risk, and crisis management practices.[5]

In 2017, Varlack was appointed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as Deputy Director of State Operations, Chief Risk Officer of the State and Special Counsel. She managed the day-to-day operations, policy development and implementation of major policy initiatives for 69 New York State agencies and authorities covering health, financial services, energy, environment, public safety and housing.[6]

Before joining City Hall, Varlack served as a senior advisor for operations to then New York City Schools Chancellor David C. Banks, where she advised the Adams' administration on COVID-19 re-opening protocols and execution of the NYC Summer Rising program. Varlack was appointed to a seven-year term as a Trustee of the State University of New York in July 2020.[7]
