Lahane Hospital, officially Dr. António de Carvalho Hospital[1] (Portuguese: Hospital Dr. António de Carvalho, Tetum: Óspital Dr. António de Carvalho), and also known as the former Portuguese Hospital (Portuguese: antigo Hospital Português,[2] Tetum: antigu Ospitál Portugés[3]), is a heritage public hospital in East Timor. It is located in Lahane , at the southern edge of Dili, East Timor's capital city.[4]
On 13 April 2020, shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in East Timor, the general director of health care at the Ministry of Health, Odete Maria Freitas Belo, announced that when the number of severely ill COVID-19 patients increased, the government would use the hospital as a medical facility for them.[5] On 11 May 2020, the Minister of Public Works, Salvador Soares dos Reis Pires, said that previously budgeted rehabilitation work at the site would be brought forward.[6]
Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak paid a visit to the hospital on 11 January 2021, and expressed his satisfaction with the good quality of the by-then nearly completed rehabilitation work.[7] By the time a Committee of the National Parliament visited the hospital on 18 February 2021 to carry out an inspection, the hospital was already back in operation.[8]
