COL Group

COL Group Co Ltd (Chinese: 中文在线), formerly COL Digital Publishing Group Co Ltd, is a digital publishing company based in China.[1] It produces digital content, such as short and medium dramas, animations, films and television, and owns video app ReelShort. It also provides the animation product Spotlight and the romance novel platform Kiss for international clients.[1]

History

COL was founded at Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 2000. It was listed on Shenzhen Stock Exchange on 21 January 2015.[2]

On 21 November 2016, COL proposed to buy a 13.51% stake of AcFun for 250 million Chinese yuan. It would become AcFun's second largest stakeholder after the deal.[3]

COL Group sources legal digital content from its original platforms, renowned authors, and copyright organizations. It operates multiple original content platforms, including 17K.com and 4YT.NET, as well as labels focused on sci-fi (qixianghz.com) and mystery (xuanyi.ChineseAll.net) stories.[4] The company has accumulated over 5.6 million digital works, signed more than 2,000 renowned authors, engaged over 4.5 million online authors, and formed partnerships with over 600 copyright organizations.[5] In 2022, COL earned over 300 million CNY (US$41.1 million) from paid mini video series.[6]

The company is expanding its international business and establishing a global presence. It has set up subsidiaries in the U.S. (COL Media), Singapore (COL Web), and Japan (COL Japan) while also holding a stake in Crazy Maple Studio.[7]

ReelShort

COL published the video app ReelShort in August 2022.[6] It provides drama episodes that are only several minutes long. Crazy Maple Studio, a subsidiary of COL based in California, United States, adapted some shows from scripts that were originally written in Chinese and produced for users in China.[8][9] After downloads of ReelShort from the US Apple App Store surged in November 2023, COL's stock price more than doubled in two weeks.[6]

Sereal+

Sereal+ is a short drama platform under COL Web, which was launched in December, 2023. Users have access to various genres of short dramas via Sereal+'s App or its website.

Investment in AI

COL Group has actively invested in AI LLMs (Large Language Models) and multimodal generative AI, both technically and commercially. In 2023, COL Group launched "Xiaoyao," the world’s first 10,000-word creative LLM, capable of generating a 10,000-word novel with one click, writing a novel from a single image, and comprehending a million-word novel in one read.[13] Leveraging multimodal generative AI, COL has produced comics and light animation, supported by its strong technical foundation and extensive content resources.[14] The company plans to continue investing in AI multimodality to accelerate IP monetization.[15]
