Alejandro Enrique Cavero Alva (born 6 June 1992) is a Peruvian politician and former journalist currently serving as a member of the Congress of the Republic of Peru representing the Lima Metropolitan Area since 2021.
Early life and education
[edit]Cavero was born in Lima, Peru, on 6 June 1992, and lived four years in Venezuela before gaining admission to the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.[1] He attained his law degree in 2017, but rather practiced journalism while working at El Comercio.[2]
Congress (2021–present)
[edit]At the 2021 general election, Cavero was elected to Congress under Go on Country – Social Integration Party, with 30,243 votes, for the 2021–2026 term.[3]
In November 2021, he participated in a gathering with LGBT activists at the British Residence. For this, he was criticized for supporting at the same time the Spanish political party Vox, a party noted for a strong anti-LGBT agenda. This led to his coming out through his Twitter account, where he expressed being homosexual and "proudly right-wing".[4]
In August 2022, he presented a bill for civil unions between heterosexual and homosexual couples, but with limitations, such as same-sex adoption, which was criticized by some LGBT groups, who claimed that it was giving in to conservative pressure.[5][6] Cavero defended the project, considering that it could be a good step to improve LGBT rights.[7]
