William Aitcheson Haswell
William Aitcheson Haswell (August 5, 1854 – January 24, 1925) was an Australian zoologist specialising in crustaceans.
Haswell had studied at the University of Edinburgh; amongst his teachers were Thomas Henry Huxley and Charles Wyville Thomson. In 1878, he emigrated to Australia. He accepted a post as curator at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane, but moved back to Sydney after one year in the position. At the University of Sydney, he was appointed professor of biology in 1889.
Besides his publications on crustaceans (he produced a Catalogue of the Australian Stalk- and Sessile-eyed Crustacea in 1882), his best known publication was a joint work with T. Jeffrey Parker on a general Text book of Zoology, which originally appeared in 1899, saw several reprints and remained a standard in Australian zoology courses for decades.
