Rationale for creating this page

[edit]

I think it is better to display the ISA as a Unicode character rather than the alternate symbol, . I created this help page to explain how to download DejaVu Sans for proper viewing of the character, and also to explain to users the rationale behind this. Our policies are not secret and users have the right to know why they are being asked to download an additional font. —Remember the dot (talk) 21:07, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The rationale to use a third-party font as opposed to an exist SVG seems rather lacking. A casual reader does not want to be burdened downloading additional contents just so the output of an article is complete; it's like asking a computer user to obtain special glasses just so portions of missing text on the screen can be seen. Why not wait until the disability symbol or the DejaVu fonts come bundled with relevant OS', then replace the SVG image with the font symbol? - Two hundred percent 08:57, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Withdrawn comment per explanation at Help:Displaying the international wheelchair symbol. - Two hundred percent 12:27, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Two hundred percent's struck out comments. It doesn't make sense to make users download an additional font, one that is in fact unfree since it contains the ISA. --NE2 09:16, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also see the comments at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Is it appropriate to make people download a font to see an "unfree" unicode codepoint? --NE2 09:27, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If it doesn't display?

[edit]

I downloaded the font but can't find an "install" option. When the window that displays the font when I click on the file mentioned, it displays. When I close the file, it changes back to ?. I don't understand anything, and I don't know where else to ask for help. --Jnelson09 23:32, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What system do you use? Rich1000 19:01, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This has already been resolved, see User talk:Remember the dot#DejaVu Font download. —Remember the dot (talk) 19:22, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move page

[edit]

Would anyone mind if I moved the page to Wikipedia:Displaying the international wheelchair symbol? Given that this solution does not actively apply to Wikipedia, it should probably be ported out of the Help namespace. GracenotesT § 20:12, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done. If anyone objects to the move, please contact me. GracenotesT § 02:48, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
