- 1018 – Byzantine general Eustathios Daphnomeles blinds and captures Ibatzes of Bulgaria by a ruse, thereby ending the last resistance against Emperor Basil II's conquest of Bulgaria.
- 1261 – Michael VIII Palaiologos (depiction shown) was crowned Byzantine emperor in Constantinople.
- 1941 – Corporal Josef Jakobs became the last person executed at the Tower of London, having been convicted of espionage.
- 1944 – World War II: Allied forces began their invasion of southern France.
- 1947 – Jawaharlal Nehru took office as the Prime Minister of India, a post he held for 18 years.
- 1948 – The Republic of Korea was established with Syngman Rhee as its first president.
- 1952 – A flash flood in the Lynmouth area of south-west England destroyed over 100 homes and 28 bridges, and killed 34 people.
- 1963 – President Fulbert Youlou was overthrown in the Republic of Congo, after a three-day uprising in the capital.
- 1977 – The Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio received a strong, apparently extraterrestrial radio signal, which became known as the "Wow! signal".
- 1998 – A car bomb attack carried out by the Real Irish Republican Army killed 29 people and injured approximately 220 others in Omagh, Northern Ireland.

- 1461 – Byzantine–Ottoman wars: The Empire of Trebizond, the longest-surviving Byzantine successor state, was conquered by Ottoman forces following a month-long siege.
- 1812 – War of 1812: Potawatomi warriors destroyed the United States Army's Fort Dearborn in what is now Chicago, and captured the survivors.
- 1975 – Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (pictured), Bangladesh's founding leader, was assassinated with most of his family in a military coup.
- 2005 – The Helsinki Agreement between the Free Aceh Movement and the Government of Indonesia was signed, ending more than 28 years of fighting.
