Here are some tasks awaiting attention:

Walkern village name origin

[edit]

Walkern name origin is wrong There is no evidence of fulling at the time of the foundation of the village. Historically the name was believed to have been a reference to "wal-cera" a strangers(welsh) dwelling possibly a celtic hermit monk? . It might also be named from

"well-crowen" Well of crows as this is where the River

Beane would have emerged from the crow mire.. after which the settlement of Cromer is named. Hereward The wiki (talk) 01:46, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest that you mention these possible etymologies in the Walkern article. It would be useful to provide a reference.--Thoughtfortheday (talk) 20:45, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear contributor.
Thanks for your help regarding proposed changes to the Wikipedia entry for Walkern
I have located the original reference to "Strangers Lonely Dwelling" (Wal-Cera)
HERTFORDSHIRE A Reading Book of the County by H R Wilton Hall
published in London by Blackie and Sons
50 Old Bailey EC1 1903
It references The Lecture :
" Place Names in Hertfordshire , Read Before THE St Albans Architectural and Archaeological Society in 1858 by Rev. H Hall. MA.
Reference :
"There is not much water to seen till WALKERN is reached which is said to mean
"the servants lonely dwelling "
There owing to the water it receives from springs the Beane becomes a much larger stream"
H R Wilton Hall 195.11.111.60 (talk) 16:14, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The etymology For Walkern proposed " Well of Crows " is based on local wildlife habitat, topology, adjacent place names and local folklore (which should not be dismissed)
The local Council School and History Society were not consulted before the current article was input THIS IS A DEPLORABLE OVERSIGHT . 195.11.111.60 (talk) 16:21, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
