- Description
- In the strongest sense, I wish to complain about the bevahiour of wikieditor Supreme Deliciousness. His/her description of the "consensus" behind the condemnation of Israel's "occupation" of the Golan Heights is rife with bias & personal opinion - something of which he/she accuses me. He/she uses the BBC as objective legal reporting on the Conventions. A proper, responsible editor would go straight to the source - i.e. the Geneva Conventions themselves. Moreover, the use of Tom Segev as a source further discredits this editor, as Segev has never hidden his partisanship and antipathy of Israel.
I have been unable to contact Supreme Deliciousness directly, and my edits have been undone. I have thus been unable to add citations to my original post (I am new to wikiediting and have to learn this). This is journalistic thuggery of the most cynical kind. It is disgraceful and damages wikipedia as a reliable information source.

You're on the wrong page. This is more like a WP:ANI item. Also, you've only edited twice since February. Which edits of "yours" have been undone recently? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:55, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

- SD said, "this looks like personal commentary", and I'm inclined to agree with that assessment. You were editorializing. It had to go. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 08:34, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
1. "It had to go"? Fair enough - TEMPORARILY. So, where's my opportunity to put in the ample citations for my arguments? 2. Would you not say Supreme Deliciousness was editorialising? I presume it is not the case in wikipedia that ANY citations will do? (See my point above about the poor quality of Supreme Deliciousness' citations.)
Finally, and to support my point: I see that another biased page on Israel (Neve Ativ) that I previously edited has been re-edited by none other than Supreme Deliciousness! Making the same biased points ("consensus"), using the same weak, 2nd-hand references (BBC, rather than Geneva Conventions directly). This is lazy, cut-&-paste, biased editorialising by a man/woman who CLEARLY has an axe to grind about the Jewish State...
- This is a content dispute. Work it out on the talk page of the article. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 09:38, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Make sure you dont accidentally post on the userpage instead of the user talk page; the filter shows that's what you were doing. Not a vandalism edit by any means, but still a mistake, and that is what the filter message is intended to warn you about. The message is pretty badly written, I agree. Here is what it is:
Your edit cannot be accepted at this time. An automated filter has identified it as an attempt to harass or attack another editor, and this incident has been logged. If this is in error, please report it at Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives. Note that attempting to harass or attack other editors may result in revocation of your editing privileges without further warning.
|
For a filter with nearly 0% false positives that would be OK, for something like this it probably should be worked on. I apologize if the message bothered you. However it is still correct in that you should be editing the talk page instead of the user page. —Soap— 16:19, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
- I apologize as well, since I wrote the filter and the message; the wording is intended to discourage attempts at circumvention. I considered the trade-off worth making, as receiving the types of attacks which the filter catches is probably as disturbing as a false positive (see the log; it's prevented some pretty rough stuff.) I'm open to removing the last sentence though. The filter itself worked as intended, since the message was posted on the wrong page. However, I've added another test to detect userspace drafts. - Description
- This is an issue extending from my repeated attempts to update an edit (which was deleted) I made a few days ago. I have been blocked from doing so.
Overall, I am troubled by the editing concerns of many people here. I have complained about the gross partisanship of Supreme Deliciousness (see: Merom Golan, Neve Ativ, amongst many others). What I have discovered is that many editors are purely interested in the "wiki'ing" side of editing: the location of the topic, lexographically correct posting, and general compu-pragmatic issues. There seems far, far less regard for the accuracy of said postings. While these rules are essential for the fluid operation of wiki'ing, where is the concurrent concern for accurate material? Surely if the material is partial, partisan, and, in Supreme Deliciousness' repeated case, very weakly referenced (i.e. secondary sources, rather than primary), what use is the high quality upkeep of the site??

I've deleted the filter that was causing this problem, however I won't re-do the edit itself as that would indicate that I have taken a side in the dispute which I don't endorse. Please try again using title-case: for example, "The Vagina Monologues" instead of "THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES". Certain words in all-caps trigger vandalism filters. I was trying to add information about the origin of the title of the TV program. I am trying to source phtographs that will illustrate the edit but that will take some time. I am a bit new to this so it may be that what I am doing should actually be a "notation" or a "Reference" but my proposed edit is factual, detailsed and accurate as well as entered in good faith. theinformation is accurate since the actions and actors referred to within the edit are all still alive and the activities and history referred to is recalled by them. I would be happy fgor you to provide advice. Perhaps an alternative location, an alternate page - perhaps about the street art scene in the SA capital - that would take me longer to develop though and I would need a fair bit of help. I am quite genuine and the information is factual and I think useful in its location of the name of the TV program within the zeitgeist or spirit of that time. It doesn't detract from the details of the original, but does add depth ofinformation about thed evelopment of the title. (PS - I do need to correct some typo's. I have, in my word version but would need to in this, the online version.)

If you remove the all caps in the edit it will go through. While I agree this is a false positive there's really no chance that this filter could be disabled and the edit filter software doesn't have the capability to exempt edits individually. I or another long-term user could capitalize the words later. But before I do any of that I want to recommend you find references for all of the content you are adding, or else the content may end up being removed regardless. That's the only reason why I'm not willing to simply copy your text into the article myself. I apologize for the inconvenience but I want to take this time to try to encourage you to find references first before you make big changes on any article. —Soap— 02:28, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

- It would be nice if the warning or refusal linked directly to the definition of the filter that was triggered.
The information is too hard to find in the user's filter log because the log itself is not easy to find. As a means of education, I think it's more effective to tell people immediately *what* they were doing wrong, for public filters at least.
Also, it would be nice if the warning or refusal stated "if you keep trying this, you will be blocked".
Tried to add the following to the top of the page:
<!-- <span style="position:a b s o l u t e;top:-175px;left:-175px;z-index:+1">[[Image:Bouncywikilogo.gif|link=Main_Page|Visit the main page]]</span> --> <!-- The above mostly hides the Wikipedia ball by a bouncing one. See below. -->
Yes, like that, in commented-out form, tried once with and once without the nowiki. The filter triggered is http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Special:AbuseFilter/139 . Above, I have spaced the "absolute" to avoid the filter.

What do you think of this message? Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 10:34, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Great! When reading it the first time, I actually missed the link to the filter, maybe because the wording "An automated filter" suggests a link to a generic explanation of the notion of "edit filter". A wording like "Automated filter 139" or "The Fixed position vandalism filter" (using the public description from the filter's definition) would make it clear that the link leads to the specific filter that was triggered. Actually I was thinking about a generic message applicable to all filters alike. On the one hand, using a dedicated message for every filter allows for easy-to-understand messages. On the other hand, they are probably more work to write. 85.180.159.155 (talk) 16:47, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

- I have no idea what the fuck this page is, or why I'm now barred from editing this page in order to fix a redirect to a disambiguation page, but I'm extremely pissed off at the fact that when I tried to fix your encyclopedia for you I got screens of incomprehensible colored boxes yelling at me and then dumped to a confusing page that makes no fucking sense. Please consider creating an interface for the fucking site instead of a wave of impenetrable pseudocode and warning boxes. Thanks, and please change that page so it doesn't redirect to Goal! (film) and is instead a disambiguation page that distinguishes between that and Goal! (video game).

- I'll fix it for you. You were accidentally deleting the contents of the film page, which is why you were getting warnings and errors and such. 28bytes (talk) 20:13, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
- I added a line to the top of Goal! (film) to direct users to Goal! (video game). Generally, if there are only two things with the same title, a disambiguation page isn't necessary. 28bytes (talk) 20:17, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
- No, I was on the non-film page - I was just editing an old version because I tried to see if there was an earlier version of the page that was a disambiguation that I could restore. Mind you, apparently I got permablocked from that page because of repeated vandalism. Which happened because I followed the directions on one of the colored boxes of doom that said "if this is not vandalism, click save page again." Which I did. And then got blocked for trying to vandalize the page too many times in a row. So, basically, because I tried to remove categories that had already been removed from a page when it got made into a redirect and then followed the instructions on how to save the edit despite the filter, I got blocked from the article automatically and dumped to this incomprehensible page, and then had to spend five minutes trying to figure out how to edit my own report because you semi-protected the page and have no edit links on the individual reports.
- Congratulations, Wikipedia. Facebook privacy settings are easier to use than your site now. 96.39.62.90 (talk) 20:20, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

We appreciate your edits but you appear to be running an extension called QuickiWiki which sometimes leaves messages on pages because it's not intended to be used while editing. I won't type the message as a single string because it could cause problems but it is usually just "QuickiWiki" plus "LookUp" and you can see it here. That is part of your edit, even if you didnt type it consciously. You've also done the same thing three times before, as can be seen here. If you want to edit Wikipedia you should remove the QuickiWiki extension; otherwise every edit you make has the potential of leaving messages like that which others will need to clean up. —Soap— 02:37, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

I have been trying to send you a message regarding my wife's page - message below: Hi
I am trying to get the page "Anu Haasan" removed as this is the incorrect spelling.
You will see Anu's name spelt three different ways on the internet - Hasan, Hassan and Haasan. The Haasan spelling is often erroneously used as it is the spelling used by her more famous uncle, Kamal Haasan.
I know that Hasan is correct as I am married to Anu - it is spelt that way on her passport, drivers licence and our wedding certificate among other things!
I would be grateful for your assistance in correcting this - it was correct until yesterday when someone changed it

HTML in general should be avoided in mainspace since it may not appear properly on some browsers. For the individual case, the use of fixed and absolute position div's has been disallowed because it was often used in vandalism, e.g. to cover over the important parts of a page, or even the entire page. There may be a way to get red dots without using HTML, as we do with locator maps, but I wouldnt be able to tell you how. —Soap— 21:35, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Moreover, there is a city in China by this name and any body looking for that city also lands on this page. The page was earlier also had the name 'Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya' Even 'Hem Chandra Vikramaditya' is acceptable, but Hemu is not his identity. Please do the necessary changes.

To be honest Im not sure what you're saying even with the explanation. If you had tried to redirect that page, it wouldn't work, because the page Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya already exists and is a redirect to Hemu. I think the name Hemu may have been chosen simply because it is shorter. For Western names, we usually use the most common form of the name, e.g. Barack Obama, not Barack Hussein Obama II. There is no article that I can see for Hemu, China at any title. —Soap— 21:27, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

It still would make the page uneditable by many users, and is not really an example of something you'd need to be able to test, since there'd be no legitimate usage of a long string like that in an article. In other words, even in the Sandbox, some types of edits are disallowed by the software because they would interfere with other users' ability to read and edit. —Soap— 20:13, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

However, I do thank you for trying to revert the vandalism and I apologize that it's not really possible to make the filter avoid instances like this without removing the wrod 'racist' as a stop word. (Perhaps it could look for " racist", with a space, instead of just "racist", though?) I've restored the original content, though without the last sentence since it seemed to vague to be meaningful. See WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY for our guidelines on this. Aside from that, there are some formatting issues with the article that suggest that you'd be better served by going through our Articles for creation process rather than attempting to "write it solo". There is a vandal who has been inserting shock images into various templates and in order to stop him we've been forced to create an unusually harsh filter. I've pasted the text, but it is still not possible to change it further. I apologize for the disruption (note that I had no part in creating this filter, but I don't think it would be a good idea to delete it. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can figure out a way to let good edits through and not bad ones.)—Soap— 01:47, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Do you still have the filter text saved? The filter does not allow the word GAY in all capitals, but it appears in the URL of one of the pages you were using as a reference. This particular filter has not been edited since October, but I will try taking the word GAY off for now and see what happens. All I did last time was to make the edit filter more lenient; I didn't change the underlying detection code, which isn't really possible in this type of filter. Nor did I add an exception for your IP, which wouldn't have worked anyway since you seem to change IP's a lot. Due to vandalism it has been necessary to put a filter on many templates that makes them effectively semi-protected. I've pasted in your text from the HTML source of the diff, but the filter remains on and therefore the page is still uneditable. If you plan to do a lot of edits like this it would be good to create an account since I don't think this filter will ever be deleted. - Looking a little closer at this, the filter probably could be tweaked to allow this, but I will defer on doing that until I talk with its creator. In the meantime, I recommend going a little slower with the archiving stuff; I'm not sure I see the point of the template you're trying to create, as it essentially duplicates {{Talk archive navigation}}, but I'm happy to discuss it further in case there's something I'm missing (I've also left you a message on your talk page). 28bytes (talk) 21:31, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

- That edit wasn't exactly minor. Per WP:MINOR, a minor edit is one that "...the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute". Reverting apparent original research, while acceptable, is likely to trigger dispute. Also, a reversion is not usually considered minor, except when done to blatant vandalism. - Description
- The HISTORY section explains that the site became operational, was staffed by an Artillery Detachment, then the next sentence immediately states that permission was given to stop using the 'heavily damaged' site. The train of description here is missing an explanation of what caused the site to become 'heavily damaged', given that it was meant to be bomb-proof.
I proposed an insertion explaining that the site was frequently bombed, and that the revolutionary 'earthquake bomb' theory was proven to work against this hardened bunker. This provides the required explanation, and adds cross-references in to explain how a supposedly bomb-proof structure could be damaged in this way. I believe that this improves a shortcoming in the original description.
My proposed addition was to place, as a new paragraph directly after "...launch up to 50 rockets daily from Wizernes":
"The site immediately attracted heavy bombing. When conventional bombing had failed to damage the dome, the RAF used their Tallboy bombs. These immediately rendered the site inoperative, providing a classic justification of Barnes Wallis's Earthquake Bomb theory."

A good-faith case could be made that I could have kept a few more external links as opposed to limiting it to just the subject's official website, but I suspect in this case it still would have triggered the edit filter. A check of Special:AbuseFilter/30 suggests that this is a false positive because an exception isn't being made for the case where the text is being removed from a large external links section.

That's not a proper filename and shouldn't be included. Moreover the file itself may be a copyright violation since there is no evidence attached that Nokia released the copyrights to it. Regarding your own file uploads, I can't read Chinese, but I hope you've made sure that the pictures you;re uploading have had all rights released by Nokia, or else they will have to be deleted as well. —Soap— 13:37, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
- I also cannot read Chinese but I've used Google Translate to do all the work. I'll try my best to look after the object's copyright. FinnsDeal (talk) 15:10, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

It needs to be modified as they have both been confirmed by the other Grandmasters, including Chu Shong Tin, Ip Chun and Ip Ching, that they were not taught by Great Grandmaster Ip Man, at any time. William Cheung was actually taught by Chu Shong Tin and Wong Shun Leung, and he only learnt the first form, not the others, which he actually learnt from "the Red Society Wing Chun School". Leung Ting is actually a 4th/5th generation student, taught by some of the students of students of the current grandmasters.

I can find no such page. Regardless, as far as I know, there is no filter that stops external links, except if you paste too many of them in an hour. It's good to lay back and make sure other people are going to be OK with the additions before adding more. It's very unusual, in any case, that a single site will need to be linked from more than one or two pages. —Soap— 23:37, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, there's not much that can be done here except to ask you to log in with a named account to get past the filter. In the past Wikipedia was more lenient, but with declining editing activity it's been necessary to assign bots to do much of the anti-vandalism work and bots make mistakes. It is not possible with the software currently to allow exceptions in filters in a way that would allow this page to be edited but not others. —Soap— 23:42, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. However, I expect a full investigation as to what exactly triggered this false positive, and possibly improving the bot, which is the whole point of my raising it here. Otherwise you might as well have a bot leaving comments here. I was able to re-add everything piece by piece, and even proceeding by bisection I could not work out what it has been that the bot did not like.
- As for "declining editing activity" at Wikipedia, I must disagree. The project is just getting started, as the very poor state of the article I was editing highlights. 220.100.14.12 (talk) 23:54, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
- You can start a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Edit filter if you like, but as I said, the software is limited and I don't think anything can be done with this filter that has not been done already. I am not simply being stubborn. Even if the filter was disabled there would still be User:ClueBot which runs separate software. It would be easier if you plan to repeat edits like this for you to create an account and then you won't have to worry about the antivandalism bots. —Soap— 00:03, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

- I merged 5 identical citations into one (using named references) and saved with the minor edit flag, since the change only affects formatting (change id=438721718). Automatic filtering incorrectly determined that this probably was not a minor edit and issued a warning.
- [EDIT] Sorry, I forgot to mention that one of the references (number 4) had a typo in it (Marksting instead of Marketing), making it not 100% identical to the others. Therefore, even a smart filter might determine that one of the references had been “replaced” (though even that might perhaps still pass for a minor edit).

Aside from whether your edit fits or does not fit the criteria of WP:MINOR (we could argue about it for hours, I'm sure), this filter doesn't seem to be doing much but creating an annoyance, so I recommend it be turned off, or if it's being used to track something, reduced to just a log entry. I'm disabling it for now, and will let the people involved with it know. —Soap— 16:25, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

- I couldn’t help peek at the incriminated user page and it first appeared to me as utterly unrelated to Wikipedia (as the original poster remarked). Well, sure, enough, a Google search pointed me... right back at this Wikipedia article: Big Brother 13 (U.S.). The chart is obviously for draft editing purposes (scroll down the article to see it). One could argue that User:Ryouseiken could have included an explanation along with the draft chart (or, better, placed it on a sub-page), but the real morale of the story is that one should not rush into deleting apparent non-sense from other people’s user pages. I believe that filter goes off whenever you edit an infobox in an article that is in a BLP category, or a template that contains their name. The tag has a "possible" in front because many of the hits it generates will be helpful edits. —Soap— 00:36, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
