Our friend from Athens continues

Maybe it's time for a bunch of page locks. I don't know whether range blocks are possible. Thanks, 2601:188:180:B8E0:0:0:0:ACDF (talk) 00:44, 11 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"Autoblock issue"?

Hi Zzuuzz! As always, it's great to frequently run into you out on the battlefield, and I hope you're doing well! :-)

I had a question about the block that you performed here. You put a summary of "autoblock issue" in this block, and looking at the block itself, it looks like there was an issue or bug with the autoblock feature that we implement, and that you implemented a short block in order to remove, reset, or fix it. Do you remember this event at all? Assuming that I'm correct (probably not...) and that you applied this block as a workaround or fix, I'm interested to know... what happened? What broke? And why does applying this block fix it? I'm just curious and wanted to get some context. ;-)

Oh, and I just wanted to casually point you here really quickly. I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not (most admins aren't), but when you need to rev del a user creation log from public view (usually to redact an abusing username from it), you need to make sure that both the action/target and the performer's username/IP are selected to be redacted for the log to be properly hidden from public view. If you only redact the action/target or the performer's username/IP (and not both), things will appear to be hidden just fine; the UI will output the log as if the abusive username is hidden. However, the log will still be visible in its entirety for anyone who queries the API. Redacting both pieces of the user creation log will hide it from being viewable from the API. This only applies to new account creation logs; the other logs do not have this issue. ;-)

Anyways, get back to me when you're not busy. My question about the block log is not a high priority inquiry at all. :-) Cheers, my friend! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:12, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Oshwah. It is the type of thing I'd do to clear an autoblock. Maybe you've seen the full CU log around the same time, which provides a clue. I can't remember exactly what happened, but I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have a good reason and it wasn't effective. As to the exact details, and the consequences, they're probably lost in history. But I'm sure it worked out for the good. -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:44, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Zzuuzz - That's good enough for me... I'll check out the CU logs and see if I can't figure out what happened. Thanks for the response! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:14, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Blocked IP

Hi, I commented in an archived discussion about an IP block, could you please have a look? Thanks. Adam Harangozó (NIHR WiR) (talk) 08:42, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Adam. It's generally bad form to continue a discussion in an archive - just add anything here. There are two ways to deal with this type of problem: loosen the block you mentioned, or work around it. I think the latter is currently the best option, at least until there has been a wider discussion about all Forcepoint blocks: it prevents abuse from the range (of which there has been some), and it works even when IP addresses vary (which they frequently do). Here's how we work around it:
  • For users who don't have any Wikipedia account (on any language wiki), they need to create one. This is commonly known as a SUL or global account. If they can't create one on this wiki, then it's usually most possible on metawiki: meta:Special:CreateAccount. This can also usually be done on a mobile, at home, or from a coffee shop.
    • If for some reason they can't create a global account, and you have their email address, then you can create an account for them. This is easier and best done on this wiki (although it's not necessary and sometimes not possible): Special:CreateAccount. Also take a look at meta:Mass account creation.
  • For users who have a global account, but can't create a local account on this wiki: I can create one for them.
  • For users who have a local account but still can't edit, I can grant them block exemption.
This should address any problems you might come up against. You can look up the status of a username at Special:CentralAuth. Work through these points, and at the relevant point, let me know the affected usernames. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:28, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, would you grant block exemptions for the following users? They are going to attend an edit-a-thon tomorrow and they will be using the mentioned work VPN. Thank you!

OK, I get that they state that they're in the Ghana/Nigeria region and affected by these blocks, and that you trust them. I'll grant IPBE for 3 months. At the same time, writing about entrepreneurs and musicians of dubious notability is never a good look, nor is this message about paid editing from Praxidicae. Disruptive IP (CU) have returned after block expired Sockpuppet Master Gala1900

Hello Zzuuzz, seems a IP with several past blocks for Sockpupetry have returned to his disruptive behaviour. here. The IP user keeps reverting and disrupting, and is a IP of Sock Gala1900. First detected and blocked on 27 Sep 2020, and again on 31 April 2021 Mr.User200 (talk) 00:42, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Not sure how this would work, given the 'evidence' is on another Wiki project by an IP user, but I received this message, obviously related to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Simulation12 (FTR- the IP's range is already blocked here by yourself at 2600:1700:8FC0:8C30:0:0:0:0/64). The account name had created an ANI thread- WP:ANI#Concerns about edits at NickRewind. What should be done regarding this?... (Another FTR- the other user reported in the ANI has been engaged in many edit wars and has been endlessly combative with other users, as discussed through the thread. Hope that if this is indeed a sock that created the thread, that it doesn't end the discussion on another technicality, as many users continue having issues with the reported user). Thanks in advance. Magitroopa (talk) 19:53, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Simulation12 is known for claiming accounts that are not theirs, and I refer you to this. That's not to say that it isn't their account, just that I'm not seeing it. I'll continue taking a look at the relevant topic areas and see if I can find how their interest got piqued. -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:37, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh and by the way, was The Founding Father of the Founding Fathers connected these shenanigans? Mako001 (C)  (T)  🇺🇦 08:21, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely. I'm slowly trying to pick it apart, but feel free to revert at your leisure. I've deleted user pages to make things easier to identify. Impersonation like that can go straight to AIV, or to the aforementioned SPI, and/or just ping a CU. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:25, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you mean the two I blocked for impersonating/harassing Randy Kryn, see Special:PageHistory/James Bevel and my discussion with Awolf/Mrbeastmodeallday at User talk:Awolf58 § Note for Tamzin, where he didn't deny that that was him. He seems to randomly fixate on someone for a bit. Was CactiStaccingCrane for a while, with some pretty elaborate impersonation trying to make it look like CSC was meatpuppeting. Then imitated Lilach5 well enough that they were mistakenly sockblocked. Now back to Randy, it seems. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 08:38, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also note, CU-wise, that Awolf tends to geolocate all over the San Francisco Bay Area, using random WiFi hotspots to edit. I believe he's based in Sacramento, unless he's moved since his days loutsocking as Special:Contribs/2601:204:C300:4FA5::/64. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 08:43, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I was mainly referring to a sock you tagged a few minutes prior, with a rather strange stalker-ish name, though every other indication is leading that way. The impersonation cases are confirmed to EstWhenever. The other accounts, such as US Founding Fathers regulars, STOP BULLYING each other, I AM CONSENSUS and The Founding Father of the Founding Fathers, I'm still trying to figure out, but they're also up to no good. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:50, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback request

Hi. I am Wikiwow1102 and I have made a little over 330 edits, I have been here for 25 or so days. Yes I am a bit new but if you check my Contributions you will see that I fight vandalism everyday. Sometimes I manually revert and others I use Undo. I have dealt with vandalism and would really like access to rollback. Wikiwow*_*Wikiwow*_* (talk) 16:37, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Wikiwow1102. You do seem to have a pretty good record of accuracy when it comes to reverting. I currently count around 50 reverts in the space of about one week. I think I'm going to want a bit more data. Don't let this put you off reminding me in a couple of weeks or asking someone else. -- zzuuzz (talk) 03:36, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

quick check

So I've never filed a quick check before. Was that the right thing or wrong? - UtherSRG (talk) 23:27, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Don't think I was complaining, us CUs just sometimes act efficiently, especially in the 'quick' section. It got them blocked, and probably checkusered, so that bit worked. However it's an unusual application of the page. If they're a vandal, they can go to AIV. If they're a sockpuppet of someone in particular, they can go to SPI under that someone's case name. In this particular case, I wouldn't say the sockmaster is of any interest, and frankly wouldn't know where to put them anyway. I think I would have used AIV. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:36, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Weels was a pervasive vandal back in the day, often attacking with multiple socks at once. Seeing the name, I thought it might have been starting again. - UtherSRG (talk) 00:06, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New report

Update. He got blocked a short time after I reported it. He'll be back I'm sure. His sort never stay away long. Thanks. --Coldtrack (talk) 06:05, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again Zzuuzz. I'll continue this thread for simplicity. Putting "Evlekis" aside for one moment until more is known, I intend to revert this person's every contribution per BMB. As your summary reads "LTA", I believe it is reasonable to assume that the community recognises this to be a non-first time editor. That said, without tags, would it be reasonable for me to cite in the summary that I am reverting the Billy Fiddle/Justice 4 all people/Smart Tricksta little sock farm? I merely aim to avoid looking like I am edit-warring and the last thing I wish to do is get something wrong. Thanks. --Coldtrack (talk) 19:08, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Coldtrack. Yes this is the person we (currently) call Evlekis, as I do, and it's a long term thing and they're definitely banned. I would advise caution when reverting Evlekis. Here they are reverting vandalism. Other times they can usually be seen reverting other accounts of theirs, so you'd still end up with one of their edits. So a blanket revert is something I wouldn't recommend. Reverting to your own versions, however, has my full endorsement. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:18, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Zzuuzz!! Both for confirming my suspicion, and for the endorsement. For the record, I would have checked every edit anyhow and naturally it was my own bunch (you know, the "Russia bot?" lol) that I was most concerned about. I gather you interrupted a spree in actual time. Well that deserved another plaudit, because left for hours, god knows how long it would have taken me to finish the job. :) --Coldtrack (talk) 19:33, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PS. I am aware that rules can overlap. BMB allows any revert of a banned person. GHBH implies a banned editor can make constructive and nonconstructive contributions, and if the latter means removing degrading comments aimed at editors or BLP gross violations, then the BMB argument can easily become a WP:GAME breach. I mean if I were an admin, I'll never allow BMB to pass if it looks like gaming the system. Cheers. --Coldtrack (talk) 19:35, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Where do you find the ip ranges

Question where do you find the ip ranges that are proxies? Which service do you use?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Uni3993 (talkcontribs)

Hello Uni3993. It kinda depends. Most IP ranges that I block as proxies have been found because they have edited abusively. A WHOIS lookup will often give you the range, and a bit of experience along with the contributions here, will tell you how much they're used as proxies. Some IPs, such as Amazon EC2 are publicised on their website. Other IPs belonging to specific providers can be found through ASN. There are some services, such as Spur and MaxMind, which can be used. They're better for individual IPs rather than ranges. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:55, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback request

Hi, I am here to request for rollback rights. I have been contributing to Wikipedia for almost 5 months, and have made more than 2800 contributions. I have started fighting vandalism since late October, and has been actively patrolling RC and fight vandalism frequently using Twinkle. I believe I am already very familiar with fighting vandalism, as I have reported a dozen users in WP:AIAV, aware of the WP:3RR (I have warned editors of edit warring and also never violated that myself), and I have also been granted Pending Changes Reviewer rights for 12 days. Rollback can definitely help me to do even more.

I am also here to request for rollback rights for the use of Huggle. I learnt about Huggle a month ago, and I really want it for efficient anti-vandalism work. However, I cannot do anything in Huggle without rollback rights. Therefore, please kindly grant me rollback rights so that I can use Huggle to fight against vandalism even more easily and efficiently. Thanks a lot! 4x new Evlekis socks for Zzuzz and their CU TPS's

Start by reading my comment about Evlekis's new MO further up on this page, then for these two check their edits (multiple test like edits to undo one edit of mine, without triggering edit filters):

and for these two check the logs to see the thanks they've made:

Thanks, good blocks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:50, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Is that for real? No calling Thomas.W and others (including me) offensive names?! :))) --Coldtrack (talk) 20:30, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Zzuuzz. You may have missed one of the fake "Evlekis" accounts. I typed one of the names into the contribution search and encountered this option. He (or she) made one edit which has been deleted. More than likely the creation of something offensive and no doubt targetted one of a handful of people. The creation of the "unblocked" account is five minutes or so before the batch of edits from the "blocked" account. --Coldtrack (talk) 19:10, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It would suggest impersonation and trolling, which is a thing LTAs often do. Here is not so clear, but I'll assume so. Also, pro-tip: [3]. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:38, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah thanks Zzuuzz. --Coldtrack (talk) 19:56, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No Coldtrack, you did not type one of the accounts I listed into the contributions search, but a completely different account (check the spelling: "teh" in the middle of the user name I listed above, and "the" in the middle of the user name of the account you checked; which may or may not be related to the ones I listed, no matter which they're probably not up to anything good since recycling old names is typical for bad guys...). - Tom  | Thomas.W talk 20:08, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PS. The comment after this one from Zzuuzz clarifies what I might have told you if I noticed your edit. I was well aware that I was talking about a separate account. My assumption was (and still is) that it was all created by the same person based on the timing and the obvious offensive behaviour of the initially unnoticed account. You named four accounts, and as such, all were blocked. But no sleeper check is reported to have followed which is why I was given to believe that Mr "Commie Cakes"/"Brownfingers" etc. likely created the "the" variation as well. --Coldtrack (talk) 19:40, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As a general observation, if you're talking to a checkuser about socks, chances are they've already run a sleeper check and haven't told you they've run a sleeper check. I still think it's just a noob, until proven otherwise. Still, I appreciate the pointer. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:50, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the thing though. If you go to Special:Contributions and start typing 'Mooooosa' in the username field, you get both accounts. The 'the' account was created first, then it edited. Three minutes later, Evlekis created the 'teh' account then edited the same page. This smells of trolling, with the first account being just a noob. -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:18, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Except it sure wasn't the Evlekis who edited pre-2013. I'd personally take a gamble that the sockpuppets reported were UK based and editing from the network and IP range that was used previously by Billy Fiddle et al. --Coldtrack (talk) 23:16, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey dude, thanks for telling me how you are investigating my account set!
Next time I will make sure to just randomize the name order (my bad, I should of done that earlier in my .py script) and add anti-detect features to the browser engine. It's all not on Javascript btw, so traditional fingerprinting will not work, unless you are somehow a sysadmin of Wikimedia you will not be able to see what they are coming from, and what browser. Turning Red is probably the worst thing ever and I want the creator(s) of it charged for money laundering. 150 million for a mediocre film is a crime. 77.23.182.38 (talk) 23:54, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well you're not going to achieve that by wasting your time here, eh. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:58, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are violating WP:DENY by replying to these comments, and encouraging me to "abuse" the site more by "wasting my time". Turning Red is horrible and the COI on the Fuccboi(s) articles are proof on how deluded you scholarstorians are. I have botnet IPs btw, so a rangeban will not get rid of me, in fact it will hurtt regular people more. 31.18.112.249 (talk) 00:04, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year!
Hello Zzuuzz:

Thank you for your contributions to this encyclopedia using 21st century technology. I hope you don't get any unnecessary blisters.
