Thanks for creating the page Veterans Health Administration scandal of 2014!! I was shocked to discover that no one had created one sooner, considering the seriousness of what is being alleged. DYK for Veterans Health Administration scandal of 2014
[edit]On 6 June 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Veterans Health Administration scandal of 2014, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that as of June 5, 2014, at least 35 U.S. veterans are known to have died while waiting for Veterans Health Administration care in the Phoenix VHA system? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Veterans Health Administration scandal of 2014. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

RfC for Media Viewer
[edit]Pine, bringing the 'media viewer' issue to Rfc is a good idea. My only suggestion here is to simplify the layout. Instead of having separate Enable, Disable, and Neutral fields, I would have people simply enter Enable, Disable or Neutral and leave a short comment after the vote. I went ahead and did this before people start voting. Hope you agree. If not, go ahead and revert I guess, but I think we're going to have to try and keep this one simple, otherwise it'll be all over the map. Yes? -- Gwillhickers (talk) 15:51, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Gwillhickers I appreciate your good intentions but I think your layout would make vote counting more difficult for the closer, so I have reverted. --Pine✉ 18:03, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- No problems. I think in order to get this thing rolling we are going to have to leave some neutral notices about English Wikipedia. The Village pump was and is a good start, but I think we're going to have to go further than that. I left word with a few users, but don't want to be accused of spamming, so we have to be mindful and post where it will do the most good. Here's the notice I've been using.
Opinions are needed at RfC about Media Viewer being the default image viewer.
-- Gwillhickers (talk) 19:33, 7 June 2014 (UTC)- Hi Gwillhickers, I strongly suggest not pinging individual editors for their opinions because this can easily result in accusations of canvassing. Placing discussion notifications on village pumps and other neutral forums or email lists is likely to be better received. Also, by tagging the discussion with the RfC template, I have signaled a bot that automatically adds the discussion to some RfC lists and randomly asks some users to participate. If you want to encourage more participation I encourage you to do so by posting in neutral, public forums like village pumps or public email lists that are closely relevant to the discussion and where interested editors may be watching. --Pine✉ 06:17, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Appreciate the concern, but there are appropriate forms of canvasing, so long as it's limited and done in a neutral and open manner. In any case, I've notified about four or five users individually, and I think this would be an acceptable limit for me, so I don't plan on notifying anyone else individually. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 16:10, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Kelvinsong
[edit]I do want to promote Kelvinsong's work, but I kind of wanted to put up this one, which I think is a better illustration by him - the supercell is good, but not the best of his work. Should we do the commmentary on him now with the not-quite-as-good image, or wait on the (presumably inevitable) renom and promotion of the Saturn image?
Also trying to avoid a few images that have appeared a lot - That Sega CD one has appeared at least once, probably twice or thrice in recent months, and hurricanes heavily dominated (and likely will once more dominate) the Wikicup report. Anyway, the selection is good, just going to prune it down a bit; I think you can overdo images even in something like this. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 09:15, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- As you wish. --Pine✉ 08:00, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed
[edit]Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.
It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitzgmail.com. WikiCup 2014 June newsletter
[edit]After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.
The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Sven Manguard (submissions).
The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Medical Translation Newsletter
[edit]Wikiproject Medicine; Translation Taskforce
This is the first of a series of newsletters for Wikiproject Medicine's Translation Task Force. Our goal is to make all the medical knowledge on Wikipedia available to the world, in the language of your choice.
note: you will not receive future editions of this newsletter unless you *sign up*; you received this version because you identify as a member of WikiProject MedicineSpotlight - Simplified article translation
Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.
Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:
- WHO's list of Essential Medicines[154]
- Neglected tropical diseases[155]
- Key diseases for medical subspecialties like: oncology, emergency medicine (list), anatomy, internal medicine, surgery, etc.
We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.
What's happening?
- IEG grant
I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.
- Wikimania 2014
For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.
- Integration progress
There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.
- Swedish
Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May. - Dutch
Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie. - Polish
Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.
(This is somewhat alleviated by a commissioned Template bot - to be released). - List of articles for integration - Arabic
The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.
- Integration guides
Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.
Instructions on how to integrate an article may be found here [156]

[edit]Hey Pine, I've changed your title to make it a bit more engaging and so we don't repeat "Wikimedia" and "education" -- I hope that's alright. I've also changed the template so we don't have a bunch of red links. I left the wikitext links in a hidden comment so it will be easy for you or me to copy/paste them. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 05:40, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
- Ed the title change is OK. I would like to leave the template as it is so that our readers know what to expect in future issues. --Pine✉ 05:42, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
- I figured that, which is why I only removed the links -- not the titles or dates. Is that alright? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 05:43, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter
[edit]The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:
- Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
- Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
- Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
- Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
- 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
- Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
- Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.
We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Matty.007 (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), WikiRedactor (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), Yellow Evan (submissions), Prism (submissions) and Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.
There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.
There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Featured content!
[edit]You cannot publish the Sognpost with the Featured content unfinished! Its part of Portal:Featured content, which literally gets about fifty times more traffic than the rest of the signpost! I've had to fix this kind of thing once before. It was one of the most stressful things I've ever done. Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:28, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
- It's not a big deal, Adam. We've published without descriptions of FPs before. *If* someone has the time and interest to add them, they can do so. The Signpost is already late for publication. We're all short on time. --Pine✉ 19:33, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
- I quit. I was promised this wouldn't happen again. I said, two days ago, that, in an emergency, if someone e-mailed me I'd step in. I got no such email, but dfid some of the work anyway, in an effort to try and help out. But, after sticking my neck out to get us on Featured content, I'm not going to be part of this if it's not going to be finished. This was one of the promises made to me as part of me doing this. Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:35, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
- See, the thing is, if you do all the content types but one, that shows you consider one type of content less important. And Fuck. That. It is a big deal, and if it happens again, I am saying so. Adam Cuerden (talk) 11:15, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

- Adam Cuerden, I appreciate that having those descriptions is important to you, and I thank you for your work on this week's report. I do not recall any promises being made about FPs missing descriptions, but perhaps that is a discussion that happened between you and Ed. In any case, in future weeks I will try to have FP descriptions as well if I am finalizing the report. I'm pinging The ed17 in case he wants to add anything to this discussion. --Pine✉ 23:55, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

- Anyway, that's dealt with now. How's this look so far? Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2014-10-15/Featured content. I've pulled the Clark image since it was eating up a lot of the much reduced space available, while not being that good of image (I'm pondering adding the caption to the description, though. Adam Cuerden (talk) 01:48, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
- Adam Cuerden that looks ok to me so far. I'm ok with removing the Clark photo, but I think the Clark caption could go well with the article description. I prefer the report title that I originally used because it's poetic and I think more engaging, if you don't mind. Other than that it looks like we just need a few more FP descriptions and then we'll be done for the week! --Pine✉ 19:20, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think we need to make the Fez video too prominent - with the really good video support we have, playing the video centres it and makes it large anyway - so why use up the page real estate? =) Maybe swap it and Keswick if you want to encourage people to watch, but I just can't see any reason to make it larger, when watching it will automatically scale it up anyway. Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:00, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

- Hi Adam Cuerden, on wide displays, having that break results in a large empty space between the bottom of the text and the top of the pictures that are at the end of the report. I am ok with you reverting it if there is a reason to do so, although I tried testing the display on mobile and that gallery was separated into two lines both with and without the line break that I removed. --Pine✉ 02:07, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent software changes
- The "Special:Cite" page is now called "Special:CiteThisPage". That way, you know it's to cite the page, not to add a reference. [341]
- You can no longer use the
insource:
keyword for text searches. It caused issues with the new search tool. It will come back later. [342] [343]
Problems
- There was a bug in VisualEditor with Internet Explorer. It hid tools like the link editor when you opened them. The bug was fixed on Monday. [344]
- Issues with the new search tool caused geo data code to show up on pages on Monday and Friday. The mobile "nearby" tool was also broken. The problem is now fixed. [345] [346] [347]
- HHVM caused server issues on Thursday. They are now fixed.
Software changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf5) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since October 29. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 4, and on all Wikipedias from November 5 (calendar).
- Some wikis have icons at the top of a page to show if it is protected or featured. Icons show up using CSS. You can now use the
<indicator>
tag in these templates instead to add the icons. [348] [349] - VisualEditor now tells you if you're editing a re-used reference. This helps you avoid changing it if you just want to add a new one. [350]
- The icons in VisualEditor's template editor tool for adding more fields are back, along with other fixes. [351] [352] [353] [354] [355]
- After November 6, all wikis will have the tool to edit TemplateData. [356] [357] [358]
Future changes
- The new search tool will come to the last wikis in the coming weeks. This includes Wikipedia in French, Chinese, German and English. [359]

I had reminded Ed about this, but I take it he's out again? Portal_talk:Featured_content#The_Best_Wikipedia_Has_to_Offer.3F. That half-done column went live, because you left a redirect when moving the page. I'm not really upset about this - it's an easy mistake - but... please, if there's anything going on with featured content, please check Portal:Featured content the moment you publish next time. Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:55, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
- Revert this diff as soon as the next issue publishes. Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:59, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
- Might be a little more complicated than that. Please give me 24 hours' notice before updating. I can get this to work, but I'll need to update Portal:Featured content first. Adam Cuerden (talk) 06:17, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

- You may see a new tool on the mobile site of the English Wikipedia. It asks simple questions to make the article better. In the future, your answers will go to Wikidata. [360] [361]
- The MediaWiki API now shows information in a nice format. You can translate it in translatewiki.net. [362]
- Reminder: You can help fix file information on your wiki. It will help robots understand the information. After that, it will be easier for you to search files and re-use them.
- You can join two IRC chats this week to learn more about the file cleanup project. One will be on Wednesday at 18:00 (UTC) and the other on Thursday at 04:00 (UTC). You can ask questions during the chat if you need help to fix files on your wiki.
- You can see a list of files to fix on the Labs tool. You can report bugs and ask questions on the talk page.
Problems
- Wikimedia Labs was broken for a few hours on Thursday. It was due to a hardware problem. [363]
Software changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf7) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since November 5. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 11, and on all Wikipedias from November 12 (calendar).
- You can now use more editing tools for tables in VisualEditor. You can add rows and columns, merge cells, and edit table captions. [364] [365]
- The style and insert menus in the toolbar of VisualEditor now show fewer tools. This helps you see the most common tasks. You can see all items by clicking "More". [366]
- The way windows inside VisualEditor work has changed. VisualEditor should be faster and have fewer bugs. [367]

FC
[edit]Thanks for all the help, and sorry about the problems. Last week's delay will help us a lot in future, but when it combines with me overdoing it and burning out and getting a cold... then it's problematic. No matter, I think we have one more moderately big week, and then we'll have cleared the Wikicup spike.
I may have told you, but I'll be away from the 27th to the 15th. I'll do what I can. As long as you delete any redirects when moving the FC forwards, Portal:Featured content can deal with a one-week gap, but not a two-week one, and I WILL have more time in the second week. I don't think it'll be too bad, though. Decembers tend to be a bit dead on Wikipedia, so as long as we get as much done before I leave as possible, we should be alright. Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:14, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks Adam Cuerden. There is a semi-active discussion on the Wikitech email list about dealing with the edit conflict issue, so I hope that something good will come of those two lost hours.
- If I may make a suggestion, when there are large sets of photos, skip linking every single photo in the FC report and just link to the set nomination page on FPC. --Pine✉ 07:51, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
- Eh, don't like doing that, if I can: Screws up the formatting of the (created by X, nominated by Y) tag, and kind of cuts down their achievement so it looks like less. Adam Cuerden (talk) 17:45, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

It's done, publish it. And after I had to write almost the entire thing by myself, don't you dare remove my bad jokes. =P Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:20, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
- @Adam Cuerden: Thanks. One of your jokes was, I felt, over the line for what the Signpost should publish unless we have some good reason to include it. However, I left the rest. Thanks for all of your work. --Pine✉ 06:08, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
- I have another version where it's a stick figure. I'll put that in. Adam Cuerden (talk) 06:13, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

It looks like you're online too. I was able to finish my obligations early today so I threw together a short ITM for this week thanks to Everymorning's story and something I'd written last week. It's ready to go. Gamaliel (talk) 06:05, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

- Thank god that we finally have a normal-sized FC next week. Adam Cuerden (talk) 06:13, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
By the way
[edit]I should have fixed that annoying bug where the "next" button would lead to draft articles on Signpost pages. It basically grabs the date of the current issue and compares it with the date of the "Next" issue it would be linking to. Little more complicated than that, as I have to convert to Unix time to get a simple comparison, but...
- I've checked as best I can, and tested things thoroughly in the sandbox, but let me know if you find any odd behaviour. Adam Cuerden (talk) 07:38, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
Pine, could you possibly do the FLs for this? I want to finish the last two FPs, then move on to December 3, as if we can have that ready before my holiday, chances are at least reasonably good that we won't run into problems later. Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:32, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
- While you're at it, if you could do as much as possible on Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2014-12-03/Featured content, it'd be appreciated. I'm basically trying to get three of these done in about three days, so that you won't be screwed while I'm on holiday, and will just need to get the one for the 10th done sometime between this Sunday and the publication date for the 10th. I'll leave instructions. Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:57, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Never mind, they're all but done. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:58, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you Adam Cuerden. Enjoy your holiday! --Pine✉ 08:02, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
