Joan Armatrading the first British female singer/songwriter black or white to have international success
Hi Graham In one of the articles on Joan on her wikipedia page it mentions that Joan Armatrading is the first Black UK female singer/songwriter to have international success. In fact Joan is the first Black OR White UK female singer/songwriter to have international success. All female artists before her, Petula Clarke, Dusty Springfield, or any other female name you mention were not singer/songwriters. This is a historic fact that I'm sure can be checked against records. Could we get this changed to the correct statement Joan Armatrading is the first female UK singer/songwriter to have international success. Cheers (Bertbert1 (talk) 14:06, 6 December 2011 (UTC)).
- I've added some info to this topic on Joan Armatrading's talk page. Can you look at it when you get a chance(Bertbert1 (talk) 13:14, 10 December 2011 (UTC)).
Removal of text about "Joan Armourplating"
Hi Graham This is a late reply. I can't supply you with any record of Joan telling the journalist her nickname but I do know that it was a nickname she got at school. It was the telling of this nickname that gave the headline and has since been used often. In fact it has become almost a term of endearment to her fans and many use it in an affectionate way, much the same as it was when the nickname was used at school. It is certainly was not used to make her seem an awkward person. It would be good if it were not written in Wikipedia as if that were the case (Bertbert1 (talk) 14:18, 6 December 2011 (UTC)).
Thank you

Text to speech
Hi. I've had a few people inquire why Spoken Word Wikipedia should be worked on considering how far Text-to-speech has come. After watching this youtube video for about two minutes, it becomes obvious to me. Is there a way you do record an example of text to speech of a Paralympic article, preferably a shorter one where I can do my own spoken word version, so we can show people literally why having a human read version might be preferable? --LauraHale (talk) 10:41, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Hello Graham.
I'm sorry for making an unscrupulous and irrelevant edit to a Wikipedia article. Although it was only meant to be cheeky and was not done with a malicious intention it was still a disruption. Hey Graham87/Archive 20; another Article Feedback Tool office hours session! This is going to be immediately after we start trialing the software publicly, so it's a pretty important one. If any of you want to attend, it will be held in #wikimedia-office on Friday 16th December at 19:00 UTC. Cults
Hi. You are probably right about calling organisations "cults", but in the case of The Family I don't think there's much to worry about. They have been raided by the cops; several of them have been convicted on criminal charges; they have been thoroughly exposed by Sarah Hamilton-Byrne and the media. I don't think they're in a position to complain if people call them a cult.

Editing assistance: Perspectives on women in the WMF movement
Hi. :D As you do a fantastic job editing, I was wondering if you might be willing to help improve some of the articles on Perspectives on women in the WMF movement. At the moment, I've mostly done a lot of random putting of data into these articles, much of which is repetitive across different countries. They have no organisation, no framework and often utilise really poor grammar. :( It would be great to improve the organisation and flow on some of these articles, begin to give some of them a more unique feel… instead of a generic perspective with just the numbers changed. :) The purpose of these little sections is to bench mark women's related content by country, the on wiki involvement of women women from a certain country, the involvement of women inside the country (chapters or running events) and the involvement of women behind the scenes in the larger context of Wikimedia Foundation projects. It needs to be written as neutrally as possible, to not condemn the WMF for any failures here, nor to make the WMF look extra special awesome for how well they have done that. You're good with doing that balance. :) If you can start to improve one or twenty, any assistance would be appreciated. :) --LauraHale (talk) 21:51, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool - notes and office hours
Hey guys! Another month, another newsletter.
First off - the first bits of AFT5 are now deployed. As of early last week, the various different designs are deployed on 0.1 percent of articles, for a certain "bucket" of randomly-assigned readers. With the data flooding in from these, we were able to generate a big pool of comments for editors to categorise as "useful" or "not useful". This information will be used to work out which form is the "best" form, producing the most useful feedback and the least junk. Hopefully we'll have the data for you by the end of the week; I can't thank the editors who volunteered to hand-code enough; we wouldn't be where we are now without you.
All this useful information means we can move on to finalising the tool, and so we're holding an extra-important office hours session on Friday, 6th January at 19:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. If you can't make it, drop me a note and I'll be happy to provide logs so you can see what went on - if you can make it, but will turn up late, bear in mind that I'll be hanging around until 23:00 UTC to deal with latecomers :).
Things we'll be discussing include:
- The design of the feedback page, which will display all the feedback gathered through whichever form comes out on top.
- An expansion of the pool of articles which have AFT5 displayed, from 0.1 percent to 0.3 (which is what we were going to do initially anyway)
- An upcoming Request for Comment that will cover (amongst other things) who can access various features in the tool, such as the "hide" button.
If you can't make it to the session, all this stuff will be displayed on the talkpage soon after, so no worries ;). Hope to see you all there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 04:50, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Occitan
Hi. I've corrected this change you made about Occitan language. When you only define Occitan as a "set of Romance dialects", I'm afraid you express a nonobjective and a nonscholar point of view. Nearly all specialists and nearly all handbooks of Romance linguistics recognize Occitan as one language (which doesn't impede the recognition of its internal, dialectal diversity; see for instance: POSNER Rebecca, 1996, The Romance languages; ALLIÈRES Jacques, 2001, Manuel de linguistique romane; BEC Pierre, 1970-71, Manuel pratique de philologie romane; etc.). Moreover, Occitan has been legally recognized as a language by different bills in Aran Valley (Catalonia, Spain) since 1990, by an Italian bill in 1999 (nº 482) and by various administrative norms in France since 1951 (ministeries of culture and education).--Nil Blau (talk) 15:52, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

- I did not know about your blindness. Sorry for posting an image. The image was a diff from "Wikipedia talk:Bot Approvals Group" page history that showed the original revision timestamp, "Revision as of 18:51, 6 January 2012" exactly matches the signature that UOJComm left, "UOJComm (talk) 18:51, 6 January 2012 (UTC)". You were trying to replace the signature with "UOJComm (talk) 04:46, 5 January 2012 (UTC)". It is no big deal anyway. Thanks for responding. — Ganeshk (talk) 15:59, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
- I checked the history, it makes sense now. I do that sometimes myself when I forget to sign, it is just easier to add four tildes than hunting down the exact UTC time for the edit. Plus the issue with conversion if you had set your preferences to a difference timezone from the UTC. -2 it is. :) — Ganeshk (talk) 16:55, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Samuel Butler
Hi, Samuel Butler's birth date is an ambiguous point. We know when he was baptised, but not when he was born. It is likely he was born in February 1613. Part of the confusion results from giving dates in the "old style" where the year started on April 5th. However, most library catalogs, from the British Library down, give his dates as 1612-1680, so there is a value to the convention even if it is likely to be correct.
Typical seventeenth century practice was to have a child baptised within three days of the birth, so I would guess that he was born about 11th February 1613. The most relevant source is the citation I give by Wilding.

Oh I see. Thanks. Lot of things are claimed to be WG but they might not be.Femtoquake (talk) 03:31, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Graham, I wonder if you could link the keywords "whispering gallery waves" in the plural, and "whispering gallery mode" and "whispering gallery modes" so that they all automatically direct to whispering gallery wave. The "mode" appellation is common is science, but the "wave" appellation is better for the layman because it is easier to figure out what it means. Also, the terms "whispering-gallery" wave(s) or mode(s) should redirect too, because it is often hyphenated. But for a title I thought it was better not to use the hyphens (I hope it is OK---you can see that in the text I hyphenated it).Femtoquake (talk) 02:30, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Where do I put that? And I am bit unclear about your example. "#redirect [[Whispering-gallery wave]] The thing you enclosed in [[]] is already the title. Did you mean I put this line at the bottom of my article with a few variations on the title? And is there really only one double quote before the sharp sign, and no closing ones? Sorry.Femtoquake (talk) 03:02, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Graham! Something strange is happening. Am I editing an old page (before you changed the name or something)? On this computer I succeed in editing, but on another computer my new edits not going to wiki as a whole.Femtoquake (talk) 03:58, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
I think Wiki has two versions, because on the same computer the one that loads is a bit random (depending on the browser, even if you clear the history etc.). The version with 36 references (not 30) is the correct one. Is that the one you see? It's a bit worrying. ;; 131.111.7.27 (talk) 04:13, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Fixed by purging server cache. Very surprising! But Wiki told me how to do it. I have submitted about 6-7 titles for redirect approval. Hope it goes through. Femtoquake (talk) 04:49, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Graham, precisely what do "you" in Wikipedia want for the "Whispering Gallery" page in terms of references? I have added two references that introduce whispering galleries. One is a whole chapter by Sabine. As far as I know there are no modern texts devoted to lists of whispering galleries. If there are not, could this page be deemed OK? It is a pity to have it as a marked page that is not up to scratch without knowing what exactly needs to be done to improve it now. Perhaps what Wikipedia is thinking they want does not in fact exist.Femtoquake (talk) 09:14, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks Graham. Lots better with the box lower down.Femtoquake (talk) 09:28, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and one more thing...Please could the disparaging boxes at the bottom of the article referring to it as a stub be removed now? The article part of the article is OK I think.Femtoquake (talk) 09:38, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Orfeocookie at ANI
Hi Graham. Orfeocookie got a little carried away on Clavier-Übung III and started templating the article page suggesting a split into five articles. I had already said that the part on the reception and influence could, with a lot of effort, be made into a more general article on the reception of Bach's organ music. I do not agree that the article is unreadable as Orfeocookie writes. The reader survey on the bottom of the page from 11 or 12 readers is positive. I have had no choice but to report this incident at WP:ANI, where you may wish to comment. I can't see any point in segmenting the analysis, but the reception section could be summarised with the present content expanded to include all Bach's organ music. Cheers, Mathsci (talk) 03:24, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview
Dear Graham87,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. Whitney Houston
Your edit edit removed information about her selling her Atlanta-area home, but the reason you put for the edit was "logical quotation". I am putting this info back. If you wish to delete the information again, please remark why either in the Edit Summary box or on the Talk page.Keizers (talk) 03:34, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

thank you
Thank you for the helpful information, Graham, and apologies if I gave you additional trouble rather than help. I'll make sure to revert next time I come across something. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tsuipen (talk • contribs) 01:57, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification
Hi. When you recently edited Lindy Hop, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Texas Tommy (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Tom Jones' middle name
Thank you for removing what you so rightly call "tabloid fodder" from the article however you have also removed my link to Sir Tom Jones' birth certificate http://tomjonesintl.com/2011/09/08/middle-john-jones-check-birth-certificate/ . There has been on-going problems with Sir Tom's middle name being either "Jones" or "John" and I consider that the above link (showing a copy of the birth certificate that I have in my possession) finally confirms his middle name as John. I have restored this link. Perhaps you could help edit the article by removing all the other examples of tabloid fodder that have unfortunately been restored. Thank you for helping me to English my Germanic wording, to make me create articles instead of interwiki-links, and for moving articles sensibly. I award you a Yogo sapphire, sparkling and rare, on the day when the other Graham's string quartet Chinese Whispers (new article today) receives a prize, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:39, 18 February 2012 (UTC) |

Alan Reid
You assert that my article Faceless men was partly taken from your Alan Reid article. It was not. Your article incorrectly asserts that Reid used the term "36 faceless men" to describe the ALP Federal Executive. The Executive had 12 members from its founding in 1915 until the Whitlam reforms. Reid was refering to the National Conference, which had six members from each state. I suggest you correct your article. Intelligent Mr Toad (talk) 22:32, 25 February 2012 (UTC) I took that from the 1963 election article.Intelligent Mr Toad (talk) 02:28, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Hobart training Day
Hi, hopefully this is the right spot to respond to your message? The training day was excellent, thank you. I got a bit excited with the categories and managed to get myself a bit confused. Think I'll just stick to the basics for now. Thanks for your help. Melissa Carlton (talk) 10:40, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Import Page Mage Solar
Hi, you imported the German page Mage Solar to my User page. What are the next steps to see the page in the English Wikipedia? Do I have to translate it? Do I have to upload it? Where? Sorry, but I have no idea how to go on....Thanks a lot for your help! --Bausar (talk) 15:42, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
