Successful GAN

I just saw that John Day Fossil Beds National Monument passed its GA review. After your hard work last summer, I knew the article could easily become a GA if it had been nominated as such. Don't bother about Portal:Oregon/Good articles, I've already added it to that page, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon/Featured is bot-updated. Anyway, congratulations! Jsayre64 (talk) 01:20, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

My congratulations too! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:27, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. I don't mind at all; it was good of you to let them know. Finetooth (talk) 06:31, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

I've addressed a lot of the issues you raised at Wikipedia:Peer review/SRI International/archive1, and wanted to see if you had any other thoughts on the peer review or the article, particularly its coverage; is there some aspect of a company that performs research that isn't covered by the article? Of course, the biggest issue with the article now is WP:V, but that's going to take a lot of research time to fix. Anyway, thank you for your help :) Disavian (talk) 16:47, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Shackleton as a young man

Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) was an Anglo-Irish polar explorer, one of the principal figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His first experience of the polar regions was as third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery Expedition, 1901–04, from which he was sent home early on health grounds. Determined to make amends for this perceived personal failure, he returned to Antarctica in 1907 as leader of the Nimrod Expedition. In January 1909 he and three companions made a southern march which established a record Farthest South latitude at 88° 23′ S, 190 km from the South Pole. For this achievement, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home. After the race to the South Pole ended in 1912 with Roald Amundsen's conquest, Shackleton turned his attention to what he said was the one remaining great object of Antarctic journeying—the crossing of the continent from sea to sea, via the pole. To this end he made preparations for what became the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914–17. Disaster struck this expedition when its ship, Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed before the shore parties could be landed. There followed a sequence of exploits, and an ultimate escape with no lives lost, that would eventually assure Shackleton's heroic status. (more...)

Hi, please don't break harv links when updating citations. This edit broke the downlink from the footnote to the full citation because you combined the last and first names into a single 'editor' parameter. Harvard links require that the last name and first name be given as discrete values (or the ref field be explicitly set; n/a here). I've fixed it. Properly identifying the parts of a citation is proper database structure even absent harv's dependence on it. Alarbus (talk) 03:11, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

I saw you reviewing the article here. I have a minor doubt, would be great if you just help me in it. The file File:Vtvfilm.jpg actually is a screenshot of a scene from the film. So changing the image use license, and moving it to plot section would solve the problem? -- ♪Karthik♫ ♪Nadar♫ 17:03, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

The main problem with the image is that it and File:A different love story.jpg don't seem necessary, simply decorative. You make three fair-use claims for images in the article. I think one can be justified but not three. The lead image in the infobox is the best, and the other two add nothing that can't be explained in the text alone. My advice is to delete the second two images and to re-think the layout. Finetooth (talk) 17:48, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Re: Blue Book. I know that's the rule, and I zealously remove duplicates of city websites from el sections since they're in the infobox, but at some point for uniformity's sake I hope to make sure all 200+ cities have a Blue Book link. They're not all that useful on their own (we should link/reference directly the pages linked at the BB from whatever the state's economic development agency is called these days--that info is handy), but I like the idea of the uniformity. Some were removed for weird reasons (unlike your removal), and some were never there in the first place. Would it be a horrible breach of WP:IAR if I put it back at some point? Valfontis (talk) 00:44, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

This is a note to let the main editors of Tryon Creek know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 4, 2012. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Tryon Creek running through the forest in Marshall Park

Tryon Creek is a 4.85-mile (7.81 km) tributary of the Willamette River in the U.S. state of Oregon. Part of the drainage basin of the Columbia River, its watershed covers about 6.5 square miles (16.8 km2) in Multnomah and Clackamas counties. The stream flows southeast from the Tualatin Mountains (West Hills) through the Multnomah Village neighborhood of Portland and the Tryon Creek State Natural Area to the Willamette in the city of Lake Oswego. Parks and open spaces cover about 21 percent of the watershed, while single-family homes dominate most of the remainder. The largest of the parks is the state natural area, which straddles the border between the two cities and counties. The bedrock under the watershed includes part of the last exotic terrane, a chain of seamounts, acquired by the North American Plate as it moved west during the Eocene. Named for mid-19th century settler, Socrates Hotchkiss Tryon, Sr., the creek ran through forests of cedar and fir. Efforts to establish a large park in the watershed began in the 1950s and succeeded in 1975 when the state park was formally established. As of 2005, about 37 percent of the watershed was wooded and supported more than 60 species of birds as well as small mammals, amphibians, and fish. (more...)

What makes a copyeditor?

I have a question of a rather delicate nature to ask you, since you're one of the best copyeditors (or if you prefer, copy editors) I know. I've noticed well-meaning people try to copyedit something and remove the {{copyedit}} tag, perhaps because of a drive put on by the guild of copyeditors or some such, and...uh...well...in my humble opinion, they're just not very good at it.

It's a good problem to have, the problem of people who want to copyedit, because speaking for myself, I'm certainly too lazy to do more than tag articles most of the time, but has this been addressed anywhere? If one had to be qualified at a professional level, we'd never get any editing done around here, but it kind of bums me out. Is there a copyeditors' school to which I could point people? Valfontis (talk) 22:07, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Went exploring from the mouth to about the "e" in Pringle today. This map (which you've already cited) is the best we've found so far. I'll upload the pics (good, bad, ugly) soon hopefully. We hope to check out the rest of the course soon, except the East Fork looks like an unlovely ditched mess. Valfontis (talk) 06:12, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

P.S. Looks like Pringle feeds Walling Pond and possibly Stone Quarry Lake/Webb Lake (fancy private lake name for old gravel pit). Also note Pringle Creek Community on the grounds of the former Fairview. At some point I'd like to expand upon PCC within the Fairview article--they are reusing some of the old Fairview infrastructure. They plan to do some creekside restoration. Valfontis (talk) 06:39, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good. I've enjoyed hiking, biking, and otherwise exploring the Portland-area streams I've written about. The course descriptions in the 2002 Pringle Creek document I cited are more complete than my summary. They mention specific places where the streams go underground, then resurface, split, and merge. It made my eyes twirl. Please add anything you like. I have no ownerish feelings about this article, and I know zilch about Salem history, parks, subdivisions, or conservation/restoration efforts. Finetooth (talk) 16:47, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Yeah until yesterday I had no idea how confusing the thing is. No worries about being ownerish, I just know you're more likely to get around to expanding the article than I am, so I am feeding you useful information! I will be sure to make any WP:OR corrections I deem necessary though. :) Valfontis (talk) 01:43, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

If you have a spare moment or two, you might like to look at this offbeat effort which deals with a rather curious legal case of c.140 years ago. Well outside my general orbit, currently under peer review. Do let me know if I can return review favours for you.

Briefly commenting on your earlier correspondent's concerns about copyediting, I agree that most of what passes for ce on Wikipedia is pretty low quality. I don't believe the grandly-named "Guild of Copyeditors" can do much to solve the problem. The ability to craft prose to a professional standard is a skill normally honed over many years that can't, alas, be picked up on the basis of a few tips. So we are dependent on the goodwill of our best writers who, unsurprisingly, are often among our busiest. Brianboulton (talk) 15:46, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Cricket cap in hand...

Another begging request I'm afraid! Arthur Mold is currently at PR here, and I've had a "cricket review" so to speak, and was hoping you could take a look from a non-cricketer's viewpoint. By my standards, it is extremely short, but involves something of a cricket technicality. I'm not sure how well I've explained the intricacies, or indeed if the intricacies can be explained to someone who is not overly familiar with cricket. If you have neither the time nor inclination, that is not a problem at all as I have most likely exhausted any cricket enthusiasm you may ever have possessed! But your comments are always both welcome and very helpful. --Sarastro1 (talk) 12:46, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Okey-dokey. How could I resist a cricketer named Mold? Finetooth (talk) 17:13, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the review; these were just the sort of issues that needed pointing out. As ever, a great help. I'm afraid I can't answer the "why did he switch to bowl at the other end" question as I simply don't know. Your idea about a different angle may be correct, but none of the sources say anything, and MacLaren's actions do not really make sense to be honest! Sarastro1 (talk) 19:10, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

This article generally read well when I reviewed it more than three years ago, and it still does. However, it did not pass FAC because of copyright violations and plagiarism spotted by other reviewers. Although I fixed a few minor problems in the article just now, I'd rather work on other things than to check Spokane, Washington, carefully for copyvios. Please make sure that the concerns raised at the last FAC (Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Spokane, Washington/archive2) have been addressed. Finetooth (talk) 18:07, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Clinton Street Theater

Thanks for your contributions! No doubt there have been many more special events, celebrity appearances, but the current form of the article represents about as much of the online content I could find using search engines. If I knew of other events and associated with the theater I would narrow down my search focus and update the article accordingly. Please feel free to update the article as much as you'd like, especially if you have access to other articles from The Oregonian archive, etc. I might nominate the article for Good status soon, unless you have concerns or suggest otherwise. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:35, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Glad to help. No concerns. I added another sentence just now that confirms that the theater was open for business in early 1915 and was showing The Exploits of Elaine, a detective story. Finetooth (talk) 20:48, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

I will do additional exploration here for details. --Another Believer (Talk) 15:52, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. I feel bad about uploading the sculpture images. Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for contributing to the discussion. --Another Believer (Talk) 21:03, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
Please don't feel bad. As I said on the article's talk page, I did exactly the same thing with the Vera Katz sculpture. That's how I learned about the restriction. Finetooth (talk) 22:32, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

I think you could use one photo of the statue (probably File:Kvinneakt in Portland, Oregon.jpg if it was transferred to the English Wikipedia) used under a WP:Fair Use rationale. See Cloud Gate and its lead image for an example from an FA. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:11, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. The link to Cloud Gate could be especially helpful because its lead image has a completed fair-use license page for a photo of a three-dimensional work of art. Maybe, Another Believer, you could use the fair-use image and your own photo of the plaque. Just an idea. Finetooth (talk) 03:39, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Peer review/feedback request for a former FA

Hello. I found your name on Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers and, if you are interested in helping out, I would like you to take a look at Cambodia. It is a former FA that was delisted in 2009 and I am trying to get it back to FA quality. It is a rather lengthy article and I'm sure I've missed some things. Although I've listed it for Peer Review, please don't feel obligated to take on the whole review; any help you feel comfortable with is appreciated. Thanks!--William Thweatt Talk | Contribs 19:42, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi. This is something I'd normally be interested in, but I've been having eye trouble. My recent edits have been few, partly because it's less fun editing with only one good eye. As it happens, I have an eye surgery scheduled less than 48 hours from now, and it will probably fix the problem. Alas, it won't fix it immediately. Things will still be murky in that eye for a week or so, I'm told, and I may not get back to what I would consider normal for a month or so. So, I doubt that I will do any heavy editing until perhaps mid-July. If this is not a rush request, I'm pretty sure I can help out then. Finetooth (talk) 01:55, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
No worries. Eyes are definitely a priority. I hope everything goes well. Considering the current backlog, I'm sure there'll still be plenty to do when you're up to it. Best wishes and a speedy recovery!--William Thweatt Talk | Contribs 02:08, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

The Tepees, a rock formation in Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest National Park is a United States national park in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. The park's headquarters are about 26 miles (42 km) east of Holbrook along Interstate 40 (I-40), which parallels a railroad line, the Puerco River, and historic U.S. Route 66, all crossing the park roughly east–west. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park covers about 146 square miles (380 km2), encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands. The site, the northern part of which extends into the Painted Desert, was declared a National Monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962. About 600,000 people visit the park each year and take part in activities including sightseeing, photography, hiking, and backpacking. The Petrified Forest is known for its fossils, especially fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic, about 225 million years ago. The sediments containing the fossil logs are part of the widespread and colorful Chinle Formation, from which the Painted Desert gets its name. (more...)

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:16, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

I was a bit surprised that it was going to be on the Main Page, but got the dead links cleaned up before it hit the spotlight. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:19, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Adding NRHP pics

Hi Finetooth ... thanks for your fine photo of the Samuel F. Dale House. I have added it to National Register of Historic Places listings in Venango County, Pennsylvania. If you plan to add other photos of NRHP sites, please take a look at the county lists and add them there as well. Thanks!--Pubdog (talk) 20:53, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Will do. Thanks for adding this one. Finetooth (talk) 12:49, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Farrandsville pictures

When I took the pictures of the Farrandsville furnace it was dusk and pretty dark-most of the pictures were blurred as I had no tripod along (I took the one used by bracing the camera on the fence). I did get one of the furnace and house next to it and a slightly blurry one of the township municipal building in Farrandsville. Hope they are of some use. Farrandsville is in a narrow valley, so there is not much of a skyline -we missed the furnace altogether first time there. Please see

Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:17, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Glad you like the furnace pic so much. I looked at the DCNR CCC archive and Leetonia had a CCC camp from 1933 to 1941 - see here Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:17, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
De nada - I like the Leetonia "skyline". I have a pic with the same houses, but not as good an angle. I am pretty sure that Owlett's Seasons Along The Tiadaghton: An Environmental History of the Pine Creek Gorge has some information on Leetonia. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:57, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for jumping in and helping with the Multnomah County Library stubs! There remains work to be done, but hopefully we have successfully rescued all of them from deletion. Another Believer (Talk) 17:22, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Re: Country Bill's

Thanks! I appreciate your contributions to the article as well. It can be satisfying working on articles for more obscure subjects. No doubt this restaurant would have been forgotten about in a few years, but now the subject is preserved forever on this fantastic project! :) --Another Believer (Talk) 05:26, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
