Spamming in Malayalam Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello. I found that you are an admin in Malayalam Wikipedia. I would like to bring something to your attention. Can you take a look at [1]. This is not a notable person and they have been spamming in English wikipedia for a long time. More details found out at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SuhailShaji786. When they found that they cannot create a promotional article in English wikipedia, they have entered the Malayalam wikipedia. Please take the necessary action. Thank you 111.92.118.26 (talk) 14:14, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Looking for a bit of help on this revision. Your edit was reverted, with a rather silly claim of "eyeing legal action". Would you take a look at the page and the reversion of your action?

I have reverted your edits. I think you are confused between a civil case and a criminal case. You cannot settle a criminal case out of court. Why are you editing the page without being logged in, and commenting here when you are logged in? TheWikiholic (talk) 18:09, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Album certifications

[edit]

Hi, I have a question and would love your opinion. I’ve noticed you’ve done this before. But I’m in a dispute with an editor regarding album/single certifications, if an album has a ref with its sales but the cert was updated after the article was published what is supposed to be in the box? [2] this user reverted it by bringing up a discussion I opened over 3 years ago regarding this type of issue. Majority of the time I’ve seen most users remove the sales after an updated cert is released due to it being "outdated". I opened a discussion here but they’re insinuating that I’m wrong. I would like to get an opinion from you if you’re able to please. Pillowdelight (talk) 23:41, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Consider switching to the new MoveToDraft script

[edit]

Hi, please consider switching to the new Move To Draft script. It is fork of the script that you are using, but has some bug fixes, important warnings, and some feature enhancements. You'll have to comment out/remove the line mentioning Evad's version in your common.js file. If for any reason, you decide to stick to Evad's version, no worries. New pages patrol newsletter

[edit]

Hello TheWikiholic,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Mamidala Yashaswini Reddy

[edit]

It's not clear what you thought you were achieving by dicking around with Mamidala Yashaswini Reddy and Yashaswini Reddy Mamidala. I see zero support for your actions on Wikipedia:Merging. The main result appears to be a degradation of the article, insofar as the article title now disgrees with the infobox title. All told, deeply unhelpful. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:28, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please explain this edit of yours? You should have at least referred to the edit history of both pages to know which one was created first. We usually merge or redirect newly created pages to the existing page. TheWikiholic (talk) 05:23, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You have created the article with the title Yashaswini Reddy Mamidala and I have started the article with the title Mamidala Yashaswini Reddy. I have started the article since I was not aware that a article was already started earlier but pointing the fact that my article was supported with more references than yours. Since the correct title was to be Mamidala Yashaswini Reddy (that is created by me) after the merge was performed by Tagishsimon, I made a redirect on your article since your title was not in the right format.
You have now made the entire merger process complicated by moving my original Mamidala Yashaswini Reddy to a draft with a wrong title that you initially created and remerging into the article created by you with moving the wrong title of yours to the correct title again which was not needed since the redirect was already properly performed to the correct title bearing article and references. 456legend (talk) 07:46, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming good faith, I take your argument that you are not aware of the existing page when you create a new page of the same subject.
But once you became aware of the existing page, instead of redirecting the newly created page of yours and changing the title according to the most reliable sources, you redirected the existing page to the newly created page of yours. TheWikiholic (talk) 14:39, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Modi

[edit]

Whatever Modi's past role may have been, it does not justify him being placed in the IPL parent category. You are evidently looking at this through the wrong end of the telescope. The real purpose of categories in any system, not just this site, is to provide users with a means of navigation. Site editors must therefore decide what goes into a category on the basis of that category's purpose, not on the basis of connectivity (although, obviously, that must also exist). If the latter applied, there would be tens of thousands of articles in the IPL category and how would that help the readers? Modi, like all the teams, their owners, their players, their venues, etc. belongs in a suitable sub-category. I'll leave it alone for now, though, and let you think about it. New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

[edit]

Hello TheWikiholic,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

"The first week of sales for each album is important" is this a guide written anywhere or is it something you came up with? Not to mention this fact's awkward placement disrupts the flow of the topic sentence (originally: "A commercial success in the U.S., Fearless set many chart records and catapulted Swift to mainstream prominence"). Ippantekina (talk) 04:49, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to add that I was the one who brought this article to GA, FA, and GT if that should make a difference. Ippantekina (talk) 04:49, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See the page is a standalone article of an album, and the commercial performance of that album is important in its own right. USA is the world's biggest market in the world and debuting it atop of bb200 chart by selling "xyz" numbers of copies is very significant. That her recent albums sold more have no role in the performance of this specific album. TheWikiholic (talk) 13:21, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could you please verify Jackson's networth data? If there was a higher estimated before, or after, by Forbes? You might also suggest overall improvements to the list. Thanks, --Apoxyomenus (talk) 16:54, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In 2018, Forbes reported that Michael Jackson's total career pretax earnings, both in life and posthumously, amounted to $4.2 billion. However, aside from this report, I have not seen any estimates of Jackson's net worth exceeding $350 million during his lifetime, even though he claimed it was over a billion dollars in the television special "Living with Michael Jackson" with Martin Bashir.
I believe the figures provided by Yahoo regarding Jackson's net worth are significantly underestimated and not well-researched. They seem to confuse the value of Jackson's name and likeness with the subject of the case between the Jackson estate and the IRS. According to Billboard, People magazine, and Rolling Stone, the estate is worth over $2 billion. The estate has earned more than $2.7 billion as of 2023, and according to multiple sources, his Mijac catalog is valued between $1.2 billion and $2 billion.1, 2 Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that his estate is worth over $2 billion. Best Selling Artists

[edit]

Michael Jackson was recently certified for Rock with You in Spain, this adds 30k to his total bringing his certified sales up to 290.18 million. I had already accounted for this, but you reverted it. So you will have to make this change yourself then.

https://www.elportaldemusica.es/awards/index?AwardsSearch%5Bartist%5D=MICHAEL+JACKSON&AwardsSearch%5Btitle%5D=&AwardsSearch%5Byear%5D=2024&AwardsSearch%5Bweek%5D=&AwardsSearch%5Bgroup%5D=&AwardsSearch%5Baward%5D=&page=1&per-page=10 Never17 (talk) 05:01, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was already added before your edit TheWikiholic (talk) 17:33, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Thank you for your hardwork. Imputing the sales from every country comes results in (177.3 million + 4.65 million + 14.12500 million + 43.48 million + 11.7 million + 8.64000 million + 7.72000 million + 460 000 + 2.2 million + 1.58000 million + 2.46500 million + 1.33000 million + 275 000 + 3 million + 1 million + 5.69 million + 664 000 + 695 000 + 1.19700 million + 530 000 + 384 127 + 912 500 + 125 000 = 291.1 Million)
So i decided to make that change to reflect it. Never17 (talk) 17:40, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This calculation is incorrect. The totals have been calculated on a country-by-country basis. For example, you cannot combine the 125K from Portugal with 384,127 from another country, or 695K from Belgium. The article currently excludes sales totals below 100K. It's advisable to revert this edit, as you can't apply this approach solely to Jackson. TheWikiholic (talk) 19:09, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I thought we were going by the sum of every country's certified sales.
The Beatles adds up to 295 million, they have that
Elvis Presley adds up to 234 Million, he has that
There's no deviation between the sum of their figures and their certified sales. But his figures for some reason will result in a different input. Never17 (talk) 19:32, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unless the method you are talking about it, is applying new certifications to the overall total rather than the sum. In which case that makes sense. Never17 (talk) 19:36, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Coldplay

[edit]

Why have you removed my edit pointing out Coldplay sold 200 million records? If you think the source is not reliable I can find another one for you. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 16:36, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The total available certifications for Coldplay (154M) isnt enough for the claimed sales of 200M for an artist debuted in the late 90's or peaked in 21st century. TheWikiholic (talk) 16:47, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The older the act, the more undercertified they are. Coldplay only has the United Kingdom being consistently updated, selling 200 million records with 154 million being already certified is not inconceivable for them, specially when the sources for 100 million claim those are album units alone rather than albums + singles. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 16:52, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Most sources uses albums sales for record sales in general and the older acts doesn't have certifications updated doesn't mean they have millions of certifications to updated. The recent certifications of Coldplay are majority are automatic (UK in general) streaming generated. There are multiple independent reliable sources reports Beatles, Michael Jackson and Elvis has sold more than a Billion records but we are not taking those numbers. TheWikiholic (talk) 17:03, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Most sources for Coldplay at 100 million specifically say "albums" instead of records, so it's not the same thing at all. And your comparison is really dishonest, there's a big difference between saying an act with 154 million certified units sold 200 million and an claiming an act with 400 million certified units sold 1 billion. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 17:07, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Coldplay's first record charted in 1999, by which time most of the certifying bodies active today were already established. However, they didn't receive many certifications before the 2010s, meaning that most of their certifications come from streaming-generated songs. It's important to note that certifications don't equate to total sales, and Coldplay's certifications alone aren't sufficient to place them in the 200 million records club. To understand this, compare the total available certifications of all the artists in the 200 million category, along with the year they first charted, and see the difference for yourself. TheWikiholic (talk) 23:16, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So when they reach 200 million in certifications you will finally stop pretending they are a commercial failure then? Alright, I'll wait then. But sources still say 100 million ALBUMS and not RECORDS so stop changing that. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 19:33, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The media began using albums instead of records after you made this change on the Coldplay article. It means they might have copied the wording from the Wikipedia itself. Recommend you to familiarise with WP:Circular TheWikiholic (talk) 19:59, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How do you explain the British Phonographic Industry and Variety using albums instead of records before I made the edit then? GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 20:02, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BPI doesn't track the record sales outside of UK, and both BPI and Variety reporting the same thing on the same day (on May 5, 2021) doesn't look like a coincidence, but it is obvious that they are reporting what the record label released. Besides that it's common among media to report record sales as album sales. So no need to add any footnotes when we have sources like BBC and EW explicitly reporting record sales instead of album sales a few days prior and after to this. There are multiple articles from the BBC saying 100 million albums instead of records:
Pollstar, Rolling Stone and The Telegraph also have made the same claim, do you genuinely believe my little edit was so influential? That none of these media outlets have fact checked anything? You are just in denial at this point.
And here's yet another source from before my edit was made:

By the way, what are you trying to prove by saying "they are reporting what the record label released"? That's literally what all outlets do, even the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 20:53, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Certifying bodies do not report exactly what the label report. They do an independent audit by using an independent agency and reward certifications if the audit figures meet their thresholds. TheWikiholic (talk) 21:16, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We are just repeating stuff here. I'll only answer on Talk:List of best-selling music artists from now on. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 21:19, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
