Allan Scherlen is a professor and librarian at Appalachian State University. More specifically, Scherlen is the collection management librarian for the social sciences at ASU Library where he selects and evaluates materials for eight disciplines as well as teaches library research. He is active in professional organizations, University affairs, and scholarship. Among his areas of professional service, Scherlen currently serves as an associate editor for the North Carolina Libraries journal and for five years was the co-editor of the Balance Point section of the international journal,Serials Review, producing a number of articles related to libraries, scholarly publishing and international topics. He is also currently an editorial board member for the journal, Library Collections, Acquisitions and Technical Services.
Within Appalachian State University, he has been active on numerous committees but most recently on the Sustainability Council and the Global Learning Awards Committee. In 2013-2014, Scherlen received two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities to improve the library’s collection of materials related to Muslim cultures and to host a series of book discussions, lectures, and films related to Islam to improve intercultural understanding.
In the scholarship area, he has published articles on various issues including trends in scholarly publishing and international librarianship in: International Information and Library Review, Serials Librarian, Public Libraries, North Carolina Libraries, Collection Management, Journal of Criminal Justice Education, and International Journal of Criminal Justice Sciences. He has presented at conferences of the American Library Association, the Mexican Library Association (Asociación Mexicana de Bibliotecarios), the North American Serials Interest Group, North Carolina Library Association, and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
He has also traveled to Mexico and China to help develop international cooperative exchanges between Appalachian State University Library and university libraries in those countries. He participated in an exchange program with Fudan University in 2011 where he delivered presentations and developed a scholarly project of mutual interest to Fudan and Appalachian State Library. This collaboration among librarian scholars at Appalachian State and two universities in China resulted in a published study that will serve to improve library services for Chinese students in the United States.
