Pollution sidebar

[edit]

I've created a pollution sidebar as the navbox was too far down to make it easily useble to navigate between related pages.

Jamzze, I am not a big fan of sidebars. It contains now the same information as the navbox, right? Why should people not scroll to the bottom to access the navbox? Also, could you please take out the ugly yellow highlighting. To me it looks like a website from the 1990s with that kind of yellow in it. (Thewellman, your thoughts?) EMsmile Thank you for your comments. As with most sidebars on wikipedia, they help users to navigate more easily between articles and save the user from having to scroll all the way down to the bottom of an article to get to the next thematically relevant article. There are a lot of pollution topics, hence its size. Additionally, the sidebar does not contain the same information as the nav box - with the navbox hosting more information regarding treaties, etc.
There might be room to reduce its size by the sidebar focusing on main topic articles (e.g. the impact of mining on the environment) and the navbox can have a more expanded scope. This would only work for topics that have a main overview article, whereas some topics do not. For casual readers, though, this might reduce their understanding of the scope pollution has as they may not encounter the navbox as it is at the bottom of the page.
As for the colour, I picked it to reflect a "pollutant" aesthetic - please feel free to change it if that is what you want! Jamzze (talk) 13:28, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm yea, I am not sure. I guess side bars are a "personal preference" thing. Which one works better on mobile phones, sidebars or navboxes? As to the yellow colour, why have a colour at all? Compare with this sidebar for research topics which uses no colours: Template:Research_sidebar. EMsmile (talk) 14:32, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I am aware, both nav boxes and sidebars do not show up on the mobile app. As they are a desktop-focused feature, ensuring maximum navigation between relevant articles in that format is the key issue. Throughout wiki articles there are uses of sidebars and nav boxes used together (for example, socialism) to allow ease of navigation for whatever preferred style of the user. So, it is not a personal perference, but a common convention throughout wikipedia to have them. As for the colour, that is an aesthetic choice to make the series on pollution stand out. I encourage features like sidebars and navigation boxes because they offer a relatively compact format for readers to select alternative articles if the present article insufficiently describes the subject of their interest. I'm neutral as to whether one might be preferable to the other, and I would not discourage the option of having both. With the exception of color combinations which offer insufficient contrast for color-blind individuals, I value the opinions of female editors with respect to color preferences, since human males are much more likely to have color perception limitations. Well, I am female but I don't claim to be an expert on colours. :-) However, the yellow definitely doesn't work for me. It looks like highlighting of text in a Word document that still needs changing (that's where I use yellow for example). Compare with the colours used here for other environment sidebars: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Category:Environment_sidebar_templates I suggest either no colour or a faint grey or brown (if it's meant to indicate pollution). For sure something faint and not sticking out so much. Thanks. EMsmile (talk) 00:31, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure if sex or gender has impact on colour perception ... ? Anyway, I tried a couple of different colours - let me know what you think! Jamzze (talk) 06:51, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's better now, thanks. Could you also change the colour for the navbox? It's currently still the yellow colour: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Template:Pollution . Also, I am wondering if the photo is ideal. It just shows air pollution from one stack. Might be better to show a more drastic photo? Perhaps one that shows air pollution, solid waste and water pollution together? I think there are probably some who would show that from low income areas (urban slums) in big cities in developing countries in particular. EMsmile (talk) 01:42, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Should space be its own subcategory if it only has one article, i.e. space debris, attached to it? Perhaps it should be moved to misc instead? I do not think the article satellite should be listed below either as it is covered by space debris. Oldgraycat98 (talk) 13:16, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
