Proper designation for proposed memorial

[edit]

Although the foundation refers to the proposed memorial as a "national memorial", that exact phrasing does not seem to be finalized yet, in terms of congressional authorization. The initial legislation (Public Law 104-333) does not use the term "national memorial." [1]. Currently, neither does the National Park Service. [2] They call it the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, similar to other sites or the Mall, such as the "Lincoln Memorial", "Thomas Jefferson Memorial", "George Mason Memorial", et cetera.

This, of course, may change with final Congressional authorization. However, the designation means little in terms of how it is administered, nor in the honor conferred. But this may require this wikipedia article to be renamed in the future. — Eoghanacht talk 16:36, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox / 3rd non-presidential memorial on the mall

[edit]

As a proposed memorial, much of the infobox is blank. The lat/long is based on a "best guess" given the recommended location. Also, I changed the reference from "second non-President so honored" to "third." See: John Ericsson National Memorial and George Mason Memorial. — Eoghanacht talk 15:10, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Matching Grant by Congress?

[edit]

Doing some readings from article, it is stated that there were matching grants given by Congress. The link provided on the reference states that "c) Payment of Expenses.--The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity shall be solely responsible for acceptance of contributions for, and payment of the expenses of, the establishment of the memorial. No Federal funds may be used to pay any expense of the establishment of the memorial." [3] Do you have any citations for the matching grants?

Alright the website here states that up to 10 million dollars in matching grants has been authorized by Congress. A notation should be make http://www.mlkmemorial.org/site/c.hkIUL9MVJxE/b.1304209/k.CC8D/Federal_Appropriations_Match.htm

[edit]

shouldn't there be a bit about the controversy of having a chinese guy being the sculptor for this? Skhatri2005 03:59, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 15:52, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Past Tense

[edit]

It would be appropriate to change much of the past tense verbiage to present tense at this point. I'll do it if I get some time. Originalname37 (Talk?) 18:36, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Page Move: "...National Memorial" → "...Memorial"

[edit]

As per my thread from years ago, the official name now seems to be "Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial." [4] Seem appropriate to move the page. The target page is a redirect. — Eoghanacht talk 12:43, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Citations marked as "disputed"

[edit]

I have marked four incomplete citations as "disputed". This was the most specific tag that I could find for problematic sources, though it's certainly not great. That said, the four templates that I marked (see diff where I marked them) don't have enough information in them, as they lacked an article, author, etc. Basically, they lacked enough information to actually be useful. Therefore I've tagged these for now so that the person who added these (or someone else) will be able to notice these and complete them. SchuminWeb (Talk) 15:22, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Found a better tag. Same intent, but now marked with {{full}}, which has the same intent, but still marks the sources as problematic. SchuminWeb (Talk) 15:39, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Inscription controversy

[edit]

I rewrote the two sections discussing the inscription issue. The content that was here contained a number of errors and weirdnesses, such as the impression that Maya Angelou was the one to point out the paraphrased quote (which was clearly the work of Rachel Manteuffel); incorrectly stating the actual original quote as simply "If you want to say I was a drum major, say I was a drum major for justice"; and citing a USA Today article to back up the statement that the architect had said the quote wouldn't be changed, when the UT article was clearly just restating the content of the Post piece, and neither piece included such a statement (granted, the USA Today headline was misleading). Memorial Foundation and fundraising website change

[edit]

I changed the link for the Memorial Foundation website from mlkmemorial.org (which showed the domain expired at the end of 2013) to thememorialfoundation.org. [edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: not moved. WP:JR states that a comma is to do away with. The only way this move would be successful is if there's consensus to change WP:JR. (non-admin closure) JudgeRM (talk to me) 17:17, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Martin Luther King Jr. MemorialMartin Luther King, Jr. Memorial – correct official orthography, cf. https://www.nps.gov/mlkm/index.htm Hubon (talk) 22:26, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 23:24, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Hubon: This clashes with the Wikipedia Sr/Jr comma policy. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 23:24, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sadly, Oppose, and where were you when we needed you? The problem with this now is that the removal of commas from articles of non-fictional people with 'Jr.' or 'Sr.' names is settled policy, for better or worse (I fall on the 'worse' side). WP:JR is used to remove real people's comma from their articles, grabs it off them like grabbing a piece of their history and disposing of it so that it is seen no more. That's happened to Martin Luther King, Jr. His comma is gone from here. Why this affects the Memorial page is that Wikipedia's style is that names of real people have to be consistent within an article. Unless King's name is changed back at his main page, or unless we make all of his related pages, including this one, simply 'Martin Luther King' and drop the Jr. throughout (it's MLK, not MLKJ, this option should be discussed), the Memorial page has to be misnamed as it is now, without the comma.
