Possibility Of Existence Before August 2014

[edit]

I do believe that the dinosaur itself (Even If Not The Game) had existed before August and maybe even 2014, even if the game was unplayable at that period, if research is needed to be done about it I will, just instances of the dinosaur (And Images) have appeared before August 2014, could it be that the Easter egg was there before it was a game?

My sources are Tineye.com (And other reverse image sites) in which searching a few different image versions of the dinosaur, results come up before its initial release as of this time that we know of

It seems likely that the dino existed before it was animated, but the only one of those links that seems reasonably credible is the googlesystem blog. Maybe there will be some release notes archived away somewhere that you can find? — HTGS (talk) 02:26, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Discovery In Chrome Dino Game By Daniel Jacob Kantrowitz

[edit]

In The Chrome Dino Game If You Before You Start You Click On The Dino, Then Press The Down Arrow The Dino will Be Selected, If You Then Click The Up Arrow Or Spacebar To Start The Game, The Music Will Be Different And You Will Hear A Ding Whenever You Need To Jump Or Crouch To Avoid An Obstacle Allowing You To Get Incredibly High Scores. I Normally Am Not Very Good At The Game But With This Cheat, I Got The Score of 1,453. This Is A Great Easter Egg And I Found It By Accident — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.49.192.59 (talk) 14:08, June 28, 2021 (UTC)

I just tested this out and it indeed works (clicking on the dinosaur once before pressing the space bar will activate some sort of "easy mode"). Unfortunately, in order for this information to be included, you must cite a reliable source rather than merely your own experience, per WP:VNT and WP:OR. InfiniteNexus (talk) 16:41, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, this is quite verifiable, as you have seen. I think it comes down more to whether the detail needs to be covered. Reliable sources certainly give a sense of what is notable and what is not. WP:GAMECRUFT is the relevant guidance. Without a Wikipedia account, it's hard to contact Daniel, but he might be better off sending this tip to a video game journal or website than posting here. — HTGS (talk) 22:29, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The point I was trying to make is that we can't just add this information without citing any sources. The notability of the subject is another matter. InfiniteNexus (talk) 22:45, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I understand what you were saying, and I agree that it should not be added. I just disagreed on the specifics of your rationale. Pedantic, I know. (And I meant notability of details; but perhaps I should have said used a different word.) — HTGS (talk) 22:49, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We could actually, gameplay comes under WP:PLOT, no sources needed for simple statements that are "sourced" to the work itself; the question with game cruft is how awfully specific to get about using controls and sequences for things. And the answer here is that it would be excessive. Kingsif (talk) 20:02, 3 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

GA nom?

[edit]

@InfiniteNexus: As the only consistent editor to this article, I want to ask your views on nominating it for Good Article status; I have tidied it up a little bit (after I got stuck without internet and played it for about three days straight...) and think it is in satisfactory condition for such a review. I have nominated (and reviewed) many GANs and would be happy to take it through the process if you think this is a good idea, but as a main contributor you are welcome to do that instead! Thanks, Kingsif (talk) 03:32, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kingsif: XTools actually identifies you as the top contributor to the article, followed by a blocked sockpuppet, so you're welcome to nominate the article for GA if you wish. WP:GACR doesn't say anything about length, but my only concern would be whether the article has enough detail for a GAN. InfiniteNexus (talk) 17:23, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a thorough polishing of the article. Should be good for a GAN. InfiniteNexus (talk) 18:41, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I will be reviewing this. — The Most Comfortable Chair 09:04, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lead

[edit]
  • Shouldn't "Alan Bettes" and "Edward Jung" be added after "Sebastien Gabriel" in the infobox and lead? Alternatively, you can list all three names in the infobox, and use "members of the Chrome UX team" in the lead.

Gameplay

[edit]
  • "When a user attempts to navigate to a web page on Google Chrome while being offline, the browser notifies the user that they are not connected to the Internet, with an illustration of a pixelated Tyrannosaurus rex, named the "Lonely T-Rex" and designed by Googler Sebastien Gabriel, shown at the top." — The sentence is a little overstretched. I would suggest splitting it into two sentences, or moving the "designed by Googler Sebastien Gabriel" to the "Development" section.
  • "As the game progresses, the speed of play gradually increases" — Is there a point after which the speed remains constant or will it always continue increasing? If the former is true, probably worth mentioning when that transition happens.
  • "until the user hits an obstacle" — Can add that the obstacle would either be a Cactus or Pteranodon.
  • "Once the player reaches 600 points, the game switches from dark gray graphics on a white background to pale gray graphics on a black background, representing a shift from day to night, with daytime sky graphics also becoming nighttime sky graphics.[a] Reaching a score of 700 points will revert the color scheme back, with the colors alternating every 100 points." — I am not sure if this is up to date. On my computer, right now, it switched to the nighttime interface at 700 points and the alteration of day and night does not seem to follow the 100 point differential as mentioned in the article (day and night switches seem to be incremental now; 700, 900 then 1200 for me).

References

[edit]
  • Reference 9 — I am not familiar with this site, so I will leave this one for you; is "Poki" considered a reliable source?
  • Reference 17 — Can add "first", "last", and "date" parameters.

A short and concise article that covers all the relevant details, it should pass. — The Most Comfortable Chair 13:58, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@The Most Comfortable Chair: I think this edit addressed all your points. To answer the ones with no action - I think the speed keeps increasing; the paragraph already says "obstacles such as", so I think repeating this would be poor style and likely unnecessary; Poki is a website that allows people to play game apps without downloading the apps, and works directly with developers to provide such a service, so I would consider it a reliable secondary source for developer details, while aggregating ratings in a Rotten Tomatoes style. Also note, the day/night graphics part originally had more tentative language (I too have noticed the point boundaries seem fast and loose), and I have reinstated some of that - the issue comes that the point boundaries can be strict or not depending on each game, so we have no primary PLOT gameplay 'certainty' that can effectively override a descriptive third party RS (i.e. the points-graphics relationship is not consistent and/or obvious enough that purely by playing the game you could describe the relationship, so it would need a source to support that it may be algorithmic or distance- rather than points- based. Such a source doesn't exist, but one does that describes a possibly outdated, simpler, relationship). Kingsif (talk) 22:14, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Once the player reaches around 600 points, the game switches from dark gray graphics on a white background to pale gray graphics on a black background, representing a shift from day to night, with daytime sky graphics also becoming nighttime sky graphics.[a] Reaching a score of around 700 points will revert the color scheme back, with the colors alternating approximately every 100 points.[5][6]"
Thank you for the changes, Kingsif. The sources cited for this passage actually mention "700" (not "600") as the point when the switch happens, which is probably consistent with what you and I experience, and consistent with websites I found [1] and [2] (there are a few more of these avaliable) — the latter quotes: You won’t be in eternal darkness, however, as getting to a score of 900 shifts back to day. We’ve also been able to find a switch back to night and then day at scores of 1400 and 1600 respectively, but we haven’t gotten past that score yet. The sentence Reaching a score of around 700 points will revert the color scheme back, with the colors alternating approximately every 100 points seems inaccurate since the first switch happens at 700 (according to sources cited in the article, and websites I found) and the alteration does not follow after "every 100 points".
I would recommend:
  • Changing around 600 points to 700.
  • Removing Reaching a score of around 700 points will revert the color scheme back.
  • Substituting with the colors alternating approximately every 100 points with a general description like the day and night scheme keeps alternating as the game progresses.

How does anyone get answers if they don't ask nor look for them. Again It would be nice to have a helping hand instead of being thought of just someone looking to mess up the Forms. Help please? 2603:6010:3400:4E79:AC62:4FA3:4FE8:354B (talk) 01:10, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Name of the game

[edit]

Do we actually have a source for "Dinosaur Game"? We only have sources for Chrome Dino. InfiniteNexus (talk) 00:04, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Added main one - a search for "dinosaur game", particularly with Google or Chrome included, shows a variety of sources if you think more would be needed to show common name. Kingsif (talk) 15:09, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a primary source though... InfiniteNexus (talk) 16:26, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After some research, it appears sources either use an uncapitalized "dinosaur game" [3] [4] or "Chrome Dino" [5] [6]. Google itself extensively uses the latter [7] [8] [9]. InfiniteNexus (talk) 16:32, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(I thought primary source would be most appropriate for "is this the actual proper name"). Are you suggesting a move (and swapping the names in the opening sentence/other cleanup)? Presenting your sources would probably make it uncontroversial. Kingsif (talk) 22:58, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's a primary source for an unofficial rip-off of the game. If it were directly from Google, it would be a different story. InfiniteNexus (talk) 22:54, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
