[edit]I think this needs to be tidied up a bit. The grammar, especially in the leading paragraph, is horrendous. I'll try to mark it. Wade Redfearn 16:52, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Death removed
[edit]The part about Grant's death on 13 February 2010 has been removed. Google News has nothing about this, and neither does Grant's official website.[1]. Wikipedia articles cannot report a person's death without a reliable source.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 20:08, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Where are the reports of Grant's death coming from? There is nothing in the mainstream media at the moment. No premature obituaries, please.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 21:32, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- It was apparently reported on BBC Radio 4 news. I keep checking Google News, but nothing yet. Rodhullandemu 21:41, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- OK, it may take a while for the web news pages to catch up. As long as it is not a hoax, we can relax.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 21:45, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- The death was put back and it has been removed for the time being. It is untenable to report a person's death without a citation, so until something shows up in Google News (which is still showng nothing), the article will stay in its current form.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:44, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- As Rod says, people have heard about his death on the BBC radio news.[2]. However, there is still not one story on Google News, which is unusual. Surely one online newspaper will have an obituary if he has died?--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 12:07, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Lancaster W4827
[edit]If it's of any interest, WR Chorley, Bomber Command Losses, Vol.IV, 1943, Midland Publishing, Hinckley, 1996, ISBN 0-904597-90-3, p.210, has this (heavy bomber crew losses are given, in order, per Introduction p.8, as: 'pilot, flight engineer, navigator, air bomber, wireless operator and two air gunners', where '+' = 'killed in action' and 'pow' = 'prisoner of war'):-
'25-26 June 1943, 103 Sqn, Lancaster I W4827 PM-W, Op: Gelsenkirchen
F/L A H Langille RCAF pow
Sgt R L Hollywood +
P/O C E L Grant pow
P/O C B Reynolds pow
P/O D Towers pow
Sgt G J Wallis pow
Sgt J Addison RCAF +
T/o [took off] 2319 Elsham Wolds. Crashed 0308 at Nieuw Vennep (Noord Holland), 12km S of Haarlem. Sgt Hollywood is buried in Haarlemmermeer (Hoofdoorp) General Cemetery; Sgt Addison RCAF rests in the New Eastern Cemetery at Amsterdam.'
Cy Grant's rank, often reported as flight lieutenant, is pilot officer according to the RAF loss card. It is quite possible that, though holding substantive pilot-officer rank, he had been promoted to acting flight lieutenant. The take-off and crash times indicate that the bomber was shot down on the return flight after bombing the target. Gelsenkirchen was home to one of Germany's principal coal-oil synthetic fuel refineries, often attended to by Bomber Command during the Battle of the Ruhr and the oil offensive of 1944-5. - Khamba Tendal, you may be interested to know that Grant's daughter appeared on edition 9 of Series 43 of BBC One's Antiques Roadshow, recorded at Forty Hall in Enfield, and broadcast on 14 March 2021: [3]. She retold the story of her father's wartime experience, and showed his original silk RAF escape map which had come down with the Lancaster. It had been returned to Grant only in 2007.
