Strečno Castle
Appearance
The Strečno Castle (Template:Lang-sk) is a Gothic castle in northern Slovakia, 7 km east of Žilina.
History
The castle was built in the 13th and 14th centuries by Matthew Csak. It was first mentioned as a centre of feudal principality. Simce 15th century, the castle quickly changed its hands, from notable owners for example: John Zápolya, John Corvinus and so on. In the 17th century, the castle was serving as a fort to the Thokoly rebels, thus the Leopold I's troops destroyed outer fortification and damaged the castle itself in 1698. The castle was since then in ruins, but was reconstructed in the 20th century and re-opened in 1992.[1][2]
