"Smack That" is the first single from Akon's second album Konvicted and features Eminem. The single debuted at number 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 28, 2006. The song set a record in its second week, jumping 88 positions to number 7. The single eventually peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. As of October 20, 2006 the song reached number one on iTunes' Top Downloaded songs. The song entered the UK Official Singles Chart at #12 based on downloads alone and reached #1 the following week with physical CD sales, becoming his second #1 after "Lonely" and Eminem's 7th UK #1. The single debuted at #5 on the Australian charts and peaked at #2 on December 31. It later reached #1 on the Australian physical sales chart. [1].
"Smack That" was nominated for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards, but lost to Justin Timberlake and T.I.'s My Love. It was also nominated for the "Most Earthshattering Collaboration" at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, but lost to Beautiful Liar by Beyoncé featuring Shakira.
This song was also #69 on MTV Asia's list of Top 100 Hits of 2007,[1] despite the fact it was released in 2006.
Music video
The song's music video is a short-clip remake of the movie 48 Hrs. It presents Akon as a convict in prison who is let out of jail by a police officer Jack Cates (played by Eric Roberts), who is looking for a witness. Akon is let out for 24 hours to do anything he pleases as long as he can find the female witness. He is given a photo of her and follows a lead he was given that the witness is in a nightclub. While in the club, he meets up with fellow rapper and friend Eminem. This is the first video that features Eminem with new tattoo ('PROOF' on his left arm, dedicated to his fallen friend, DeShaun Dupree Holton). The video also features a cameo from Lil Fizz of B2K, Layzie Bone of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Kendra Wilkinson (of E!'s The Girls Next Door).
