Fort Pierce is a city located in St. Lucie County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 37,516. It is the county seat of St. Lucie County6.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 53.8 km² (20.8 mi²). 38.2 km² (14.7 mi²) of it is land and 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 35.00% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 37,516 people, 14,407 households, and 8,817 families residing in the city. The population density is 982.7/km² (2,544.9/mi²). There are 17,170 housing units at an average density of 449.8/km² (1,164.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 49.54% White, 40.85% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 5.36% from other races, and 3.05% from two or more races. 15.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
