History

2014-2015: No Mercy and Debut

In November 2014, Mnet in collaboration with Starship announced that they will be launching a new survival program titled, "No Mercy," to help create Starship's new idol boy group after Boyfriend. [1] This 10-episode reality program began airing on December 10, and showed trainees at Starship going through a mission every week given by their mentors (including K.Will, Mad Clown, Sistar, and more) to perform either by group, or individual. The show began with a total of 12 trainees, who were ranked from 1-12 according to the result of their performance and the judge's evaluation. After each performance, the trainees are ranked again and eliminated weekly. [2] The final episode aired on February 11, and the final group lineup consisted of seven members. According to Starship, “Their group name MONSTA X contains the double meaning of monsters conquering the K-pop scene and my star (MON means “My” in French). X symbolizes an unknown existence.” [3]

The group garnered interest prior to their debut through collaboration singles resulted from winning No Mercy challenges. One such single was 0 (Young), released on February 4th starring Giriboy, Madclown, and Jooyoung along with Jooheon, Kihyun, Wonho, Seokwon, and I.M. [4] Interstellar was another single released on February 12, 2015 with Jooheon, Hyungwon, and I.M, featuring Yella Diamond. [5] On April 28th, Jooheon released his first mixtape titled JUNG JI, which included a collaboration with JustMusic Entertainment's BlackNut. [6] Before debut, Kihyun and Jooheon also took part in the drama's original soundtrack for Orange Marmalade, called Attracted Woman.

On May 14, their debut music video for their title track "Trespass" was released.[7] On the same day, Monsta X made their live debut on Mnet's M! Countdown.

From NO.MERCY up through their debut and promotions for Trespass, Starship filmed a web reality series titled Deokspatch (덕스패치) starring the NO.MERCY trainees. [8] The series was later renamed to DeokspatchX (덕스패치X) starring the final lineup of the Monsta X members. Starship revealed that they intend to have Monsta X focus on their variety show skills through this series. The episodes in the series also included games and challenges for viewers to become more familiar with the members.

On June 22, Both Shownu and Wonho were featured in Sistar's MV, Shake it.
