| Purpose of use |
This is one of the most important recordings in popular music history, the first professional recording of Elvis Presley. It is an example of how he transformed an existing blues song into a work of an entirely new musical style, as discussed in the article. It is one of the first examples of and typifies the musical genre rockabilly. The sample presents the beginning of the song, which opens with a guitar-and-bass pattern that mixes elements of country and rhythm and blues, as described in the article, before Presley begins to sing. Words alone are inadequate to describe the song, and presenting the sound of this song alongside ones from later in Presley's career is necessary for a complete understanding of its nature and its contrast with material from other periods, and hence of the way Presley's music evolved and his aesthetic reach expanded over the course of his career. |
