Kingscote, South Australia
Kingscote (35°39′S 137°38′E / 35.650°S 137.633°E) is the main town on Kangaroo Island, with a population of about 1,200 people. It is a well established tourist centre, and also the administrative and communications centre. There is a museum in Hope Cottage, which tells the history of the area. One tourist attraction unusual in Australia is the Island Pure sheep dairy and cheese factory. Another unique attraction is the last remaining eucalyptus oil distillery in South Australia. The Ozone Hotel, with its mermaid statue is a well known landmark in Kingscote.
The South Australia Company first established its colony at Kingscote in 1836, before moving almost six months later to Adelaide after having sent surveyors to find a better site.
Kingscote is in the Kangaroo Island Council local government area, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Finniss and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Mayo.
