Jose Lino Alvarez (born April 12, 1956) is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher. He played four seasons at the major league level, pitching for the Atlanta Braves. He played for the Braves in 1981 and 1982, then spent five seasons in the minor leagues before returning to the Braves in 1988 and 1989. After a successful season in 1988 and earning the Atlanta Braves Most Outstanding Pitcher Award, Jose began the 1989 season in fine fashion with 2 wins and a save.
Álvarez attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he played baseball for the USL Ragin' Cajuns Baseball team. Jose was inducted in the Ragin Cajun HOF 2019, Hillsborough High School HOF 2008, Clarinda A's HOF 1998.
Alvarez played his first professional season with the Braves Rookie league Kingsport Braves in 1978, and his last with their Triple-A club, the Richmond Braves, in 1995. He currently resides in Greenville, South Carolina. He has coached youth baseball and high school baseball in Greenville.
He served with the FCA Golf from 2007-2022, joining the team at Links Players International Sept 1, 2022.
Jose and his wife Michelle Alvarez speak at FamilyLife marriage conferences around the country called "Weekend To Remember".[1] They are the parents of three children and grandparents of four, affectionately called Coach and Shashi by their grandkids.

The 4th oldest rookie in baseball history in 1988 when he refused to quit and earned a promotion back to the major leagues with the Atlanta Braves at 32.
Voted the Atlanta Braves “Most Outstanding Pitcher” in 1988 Jose retired May 1, 1995 after 16 years in professional baseball with parts of 5 seasons in the major leagues sporting a lifetime ERA of 2.99 ERA and a .273 batting average.
From 2007-2022 Jose served as a Life Coach and mentor to the PGA’s Korn Ferry Tour Players, wives and caddies with the FCA Golf Ministry. He now serves with Links Players International
An avid golfer, he has competed in many celebrity events around the country. He’s made four aces and was the Senior Club Champion at Legacy Pines for three consecutive years, 2019 - 2021 and won the 2018 Korn Ferry’s “BMW Charity Pro- Am” in the low handicap celebrity division.

Married in 1981, Jose and Michelle have been speaking at marriage conferences around the country for over 25 years for FamilyLife and provides marital and premarital counseling. Since 1988 they’ve lived in Greenville, South Carolina and have 3 adult children (two are married) and 2 granddaughters Lucy & Coco, and 2 grandsons Shepherd & Arnie.
